    1. [ARGYLL] Re Arisaig - Argyll/Inverness-shire ?

    3. Hi Listers , I see some of you have just been introduced to the vageries of Scottish, in particular West of Scotland, Parishes. . In the early 19th Century the Census' were based upon the (Presbyterian) church Parishes which themselves were within Presbyteries. . In the case of Arisaig, in Ardnamurchan Parish, along with the Mull Parishes and those of Kilmore & Kilbride, Tiree & Coll, Kilmalie, Morvern and (north) Ballachulish & Corran of Ardgour these were in the Argyll Presbytary of Mull; . albeit Arisaig and the Small Isles (Muck, Eigg, Rum, Canna & Sanday), Moidart, Kilmalie (N of Loch Eil + Fort William) and (north) Ballachulish were actually in the (civil) county of Inverness- shire. . This was OK until 1855 when the Census' and recording of BMD (Births, Marriages & Deaths) was formalised and returns, replacing the PRs (Parish Records/Registers) were made to the SRO (Scottish Records Office) in Edinburgh. At that time some of the Parishes were shuffled around and renumbered. This again happened in 1970 when the civil and church parishes were brought into line. . Unfortunately, in 1974, the then government. in its wisdom, sought to further complicate matters by introducing the regions, in this case Strathclyde and Highland, yet again splitting the Argyll Parishes - but that's another story. . The moral of this tale as far as Genealogists/Family History Researchers are concerned is "Don't confuse Civil and Church Counties" . If any one is desperate to know the RD (Registration District) numbers for a particular Argyll Parish at a particular date I'm only too willing to look it up for them (from the list I inherited). Just E-mail me at Leshorn@bushinternet.com . As a point of interest : the LDS IGI is based on those PRs in the SRO. Some of the Parish Records mysteriously went missing between Parish and SRO and, hence, there are holes, as well as transcription errors, in the IGI. . Good hunting Les Horn Onich Inverness-shire (formerly in Ballachulish & Corran of Ardgour (Argyll) Parish in the Mull Presbytery and NOW in Kilmalie (Inverness-shire) Parish in the Lochaber Presbytery
