    3. Folks, I'm just back tonight from an idyllic weekend in Appin in the most glorious early-April weather I can remember. We visited the ruined church and grave yard behind Keil Farm at Duror, and someone has been busy there tidying the place up and cleaning grass back form the old flat slate grave slabs. Many of the are over 200 years old, but, as they're carved from thick Balachullish slate, the inscriptions are as clear as if they had been done yesterday. I spoke to someone from the local historical society, and got the impression that a survey of Moumental Inscriptions had not been made. However, I do know that there were quite a few McColls, Buchanans and naturally Stewarts (including a plaque to James of the Glens). I'll check if MIs have been completed, and if not do a quick survey myself next time I'm there, as it's quite a small graveyard. 3. Hello Ken I hope you might see my ancestors gravestones in the Appin churchyard. I hadn't imagined they could be so readable IF they indeed were buried in Appin and IF the family could afford a gravestone. I am descended from Allan MCPHERSON who died in 1863 in NSW Aust his occupation as when he arrived in NSW in the 1830s was a sawyer His age 63 and he is said to have been born in Appin Argyllshire Scotland s/o Donald MCPHERSON ,farmer, & Mary MACLACHLAN (this is also the name of his wife) If you could keep a lookout for Donald MCPHERSON & wife Mary I would be very grateful Background: Allan married 1834 in Argyll according to his death cert He became part of the general depopulation of the highlands His first? child christened Nov 1834 in Glasgow and the next known also in Glasgow in 1837 then the next in Sydney NSW in 1839. The next child was baptised in a then remote outpost on NSW South coast. At the same time Donald MCTAVISH was baptised - his brother married Allan's daughter Mary. Their father was Donald MCTAVISH & Mother Janet FRASER possibly born 8 Feb 1807 Boleskine, Inverness, Scotland Father: William FRASER Mother: Christian MCPHERSON Seems that they were all distant cousins. Mary McLaughlin Allan's wife I suspect was born 20 Nov 1808 Glassary, Argyll, Scotland F: John MACLACHLAN M: Margaret MACTAVISH The surnames repeat thru the generations, sorry to give so much detail. Best Wishes Glynis Turner NSW Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: Ken Mathieson <ken@kenmath.free-online.co.uk> To: <> Sent: Monday, April 08, 2002 10:32 AM Subject: Re: [ARGYLL] Re: [McColls in Argyll/Lismore/Appin > Folks, > > I'm just back tonight from an idyllic weekend in Appin in the most glorious > early-April weather I can remember.
