Greetings Listers! I am new to this list. My name is Nigel BOUNDY. I am tracing mt mother's maternal line, FLETCHER. I recently found out that my g g g grandfather, John FLETCHER, was born abt 1763 in Mull, Argyllshire according to army records. He was in the army from 1790 to 1814. first in the 74th Foot Regiment and then the 9th Royal Veteran Battalion. While he was in the latter he married Janet McDONALD in Kirkwall and St Ola. Their only child (apparently), Neil was baptised in 1811 in Reay, Caithness. John was discharged from the army in 1814 age 51. I do not know anything more at this stage. Nigel, I've avoided answering your queries as I was sure Jo Currie would make a comment, but she appears to be off list at present. I hope you'll take the time to read her books properly. Currie "Mull Family names for Ancestor hunters " available through Brown-Whittaker in Tobermory (was 4.95 pounds) has over a page on Fletchers and the various areas where they lived. There are also several references to various John FLETCHERs in Jo Currie's book "Mull the Island and Its People " (soft cover still avilable from the Birlinn the publishers) p 55 John Fletcher foster father to Mally Maclaine (1740s to 1760s ....more details when you read the book) John FLETCHER fl.1770-1789 subtenant in Ledirkle (page283-4)removed from his land along with Niel Fletcher and a number of others (all pretended sub tenants of and possessors of thelands of Ledirkle" by Allan Maclaine Onp284 "In Ledirkle John Fletcher Snr and John Fletcher Jnr were to be ejected by 1800 withno reason given in the precept although presumably a reason had been given verbally before the sheriff's decreet." Jo goes on to say that there were John Fletchers in evidence on Mull after 1800 so perhaps they might not have left the Island altogether. p 292 Mary Fletcher fl 1806 in Ledirkle (mother of natural daughter by Sir Archibald Maclaine ) Sorry I don't have the time to type all these references out.
