Apparently his father was a deep-sea Captain and was their only child. John and Christina Campbell (nee McDonald) emigrated to Australia from the Isle of Skye on the ship: "William Nicol". Departure date was 6 July 1837. Port of Departure - Hebrides. Number of emigrants - 321. They arrived in Australia on 27 October 1837 and spent their early years in the Colony in the Hunter River region where most of their children were born. In 1854 in the company of four other settler families they were amongst the first to travel overland from the Hunter River region to the Manning River to settle on the Dingo Creek at "Green Hills".
