The Gaelic for Neil is Niall. In Scotland, this is pronounced the same as Neil. In Ireland it seems to be pronounced Nye-all. You may find it occasionally spelt Niel in the older records. I think this is just confusion by the recorder between English and Gaelic spellings. Nigel is the same name and is more common in England. Hope this helps!
