    3. The gracious list members who responded to my plea for help continue to amaze me with their knowledge. I learn from each one. Re-reading the statistical accounts, it appears that Lerags was owned by Dr. Campbell. In case anyone REALLY wanted to know that. Yes, also to visiting many of the great maps sites that are available - I can navigate reasonably close to my vicinity of interest with them, but not being aware of all the spelling variants or changes over the years, I really appreciate the knowledge of others on this list. Yes, I have visited often the Statistical Accounts pages and read about several parishes of interest. I have even more questions as a result, though. Was there a death register for Kilninver Parish? I know there was not one for many parishes. I don't think I've found anything available on the LDS website. Was it common to have a fair(spring and fall) in most parishes for the purpose of hiring servants? (As indicated in Kilninver Parish S.A. 1845) Also, there was comment about a Mr. McDougall of Gallanach who provided a slate and freestone quarry on his property. Would this have been a place where the tennants acquired materials for building? Can anyone say if this statement "freestone" meant no charge, or only that the rock of the quarry was already loose? Now I'm off to count noses in the Parish registers for which I found reported numbers of Baptism's and Marriages for specific years. I can hear some of you laughing - Best thoughts to All, Joy, USA

    3. Hi, Freestone is a type of rock that is quarried. It is a softer type, more than likely formed from sand and grit. It was called Freestone because it was easily cut, and fairly easy to work with. Is not very hardy. In your search of Lerags, perhaps try in a search engine try different combinations of whatever you are looking for and District of Lorn, or Lorn or any combination of words that could be pertaining to your search. Could be worth a try. 3. Joy, the MacDougalls were (and are) big landowners in the Oban area. Dunolly Castle and the isle of Kerrera are theirs, for example. Gallanach is on the bay, just south of the town proper of Oban. You get the ferry there for Kerrera. Sheila
