Doreen I have read that until the 16th century Isabel (etc) was interchangeable with Elizabeth and have seen hints that this continued later. (However it seems not to have been universally the case by the 1830s as my g.g. grandfather named two of his daughters Elizabeth and Isabella then, and both survived to adulthood.)
