There were many Scottish marriages which do not appear in the official church registers because I believe that the custom was (until about 1926 from memory) to marry at the house of a relative or friend in the community. This was legal and official and subsequent children often appear in the church registers. The impression can be that there were rather a lot more births out of wedlock than actually was the case.
