The passenger list of the "Flora McDonald", which sailed from Liverpool on 21/4/1852 and arrived at Portland, Victoria, on 18/8/1852 included 132 emigrants from Argyll. Unfortunately, the list is not more specific as to whereabouts in Argyll they came from. Two families, a total of 15 people, have been identified as coming from Coll, but the origins of the other 117 are unknown. Any information on emigrants from Argyll on the "Flora McDonald" would be much appreciated. _________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia

HI, The passenger list will be lodged in the Australian State that was the final destination of the ship's voyage. This ship though it stopped at Portland, could have had a final destination of Geelong, Williamstown/Port Phillip (all in Victoria), Sydney (New South Wales), or even Launceston or Hobart (Tasmania). The Public Record Office of Victoria and the NSW Archives have the passenger lists online (I think the Tasmanian Archives have some from memory), but many who paid their passage are not listed. The tendency was to name those who got assisted passage as well as the VIP's. many of my ancestors (including my Argyll one) do not appear on any list as they came steerage, or 'swum over' as we like to say down under. Sometimes the way in which you find the ship happens in the most unlikely of places. If you find these people in other (non-BDM) Australian records sometimes you will find mention of the ship. I have seen hospital registers that cite the ship a person arrived in. Victorian Death certificates ask how long the deceased was in the colony and this can be used to track back to a likely year of arrival. regards Gabrielle Baker At 11:44 PM 21/11/2006, you wrote: >Keith Dash wrote: > > The passenger list of the "Flora McDonald", which sailed from > > Liverpool on 21/4/1852 and arrived at Portland, Victoria, on > > 18/8/1852 included 132 emigrants from Argyll.
