Hi all, Please could someone tell me whether there are gaps in information in the OPR for Kilmelford. I am looking for the birth of John Campbell(not the most unusual name!) around 1764 to 1767. I have what I think are 2 sisters and 1 brother but I cannot find him anywhere. Then there is also another John Campbell apparently born on the Island of Luing in about 1842 and I can find no record there either.I understand that there might be a possibility that they were not Church of Scotland and therefore would not show up! I have death certificates for both these gents so I know that they did exist! I know that one of the the sisters of the 1842 John got married in the free church in Oban, so I have a feeling that this might be one of my problems. How would I go about finding records from the free church? Thanks Liz Langmann Cape Town South Africa
Liz The short answer to your question is that there are certainly GAPS in the records on the IGI, at about the times you mention. I know of countless individuals who were born , married etc, in the Kilninver/Kilmelford area and with no mention on the IGI, however I do see that the NAS have ( and they can be viewed in Edinburgh) the Kilninver/Kilmelford Church of Scotland Kirk Session records CH2/756 , 1758-1977, and the Free Church CH3/693, 1845- 1929, now I hope to get down and have a look through those records ASAP, however :- however what I wonder is will I find more on those that I can on the IGI , OR will the IGI researchers have already gone through those ? . Anyone on the List gone through Kirk of Session records, and who has found early information that they couldn't have found elsewhere ?
