It seems that apart from tradition, the use of the name of a grandparent or ggparent was a distinguishing tool where there were so many people with the same forenames and surnames. Much the same goes for the terms 'mor' for big which was not just descriptive but distinguishing a certain person from another. This can sometimes create difficulties in AUS where often a person called 'Tiny' or 'Lofty' is the very opposite. Anne Maye
