Not only is your information about missing records true, in 1990 with my own eyes I saw some of the duplicated records. I have done research in the Argyll area 5 times and have made some valuable local contacts in Campbeltown. My distant relative, Duncan Colville, now deceased, became a friend and mentor. His father was an "antiquarian" and a pack rat. He provided much information from original records to me. He didn't have records which I needed to cover a 12-year period of my family history where records had been destroyed by the out-of-wedlock minister. (In the original church records, such children are described as "born of fornification--" kind of a mean thing to inscribe in a church record. ) Some duplicate copies of the destroyed records do exist. Duncan paved the way for my husband and me to visit Ian MacDonald at his home in Clachan, Argyll, Scotland. I Mr. MacDonald had copies of records which were recreated from the results of research and transcription done by a Glen Barr schoolmaster named Robert McNiven. McNiven was able to reconstruct 333 pages of records from various other sources. For this great work, McNiven was paid 2 pounds, 10 shillings sterling, by the clerk session of Killean. I do not have the date the records were recreated, but it must have been some time in the 1800's. McNiven transcribed all the pages by hand, and the writing is similar to other records in the 1800's. His recreations were accurate according to our family Bible and other sources. There is no reason to doubt the additional information he provided, which we did not have--such as the name of the farm where the family lived. I did not have access to a copy machine and tried to copy by hand as much information as I could without intruding too long in the home of the MacDonalds. I cannot provide an exact address for Mr. MacDonald at this time. It is possible it is buried somewhere in all the pieces of paper I need to get in order in my genealogy material. However, Clachan is just a village. If he is still living there, mail might reach him. But, I promise you this: The story of the records being destroyed is TRUE. Betty
