    1. [ARGYLL] Greenlees and Andrew in Campbeltown
    2. My great-great grandparents, Robert Smith and Mary Greenlees were married in Campbeltown 14 December 1830 and resided there until about 1837 when the moved to Greenock. I have been trying to learn more about Mary Greenlees' family. Mary died 6 October 1899 in Greenock at the age of 90. That would put her birth in 1808 or 1809. The informant listed on her death certificate was her youngest son, John Smith. He provided the information that his mother's parents were "Robert Greenlees, Farmer, deceased" and Elizabeth Greenlees, maiden name Andrew, deceased." I have not been able to confirm that union. I would not question the accuracy of the information except that in my research I have found a Robert Greenlees and a Janet Andrew who were married 3 January in Southend. Robert and Janet had seven children including a daughter Mary, born 22 January 1809. Further, Mary Greenlees Smith had 5 children, the first being a daughter named Janet. Normal naming patterns would have had the first daughter named after the mother's mother, thus leading one to expect Mary's mother to be named Janet. So, except for the given name of Mary's mother being shown on Mary's death certificate as Elizabeth, everything else leads to her mother being named Janet. When looking at the record for Janet Andrew I have the right name for the father, the right name for the daughter, the right birth date for the daughter, the right surname for the mother, but [email protected]#$%_ (mailto:[email protected]#$) the mother's first name is not a match. How do I get past this brick wall? I am hoping that someone on this circuit has done research on the Greenlees and Andrew lines that will confirm that a Robert Greenlees did marry an Elizabeth Andrew and that they had a daughter named Mary born abt 1809. Thanks in advance, Randolph Herrmann
