Hi Frances Thank you for the map of Shirvin which you sent to me offline which was very helpful. I am looking for more information on John MacTavish who according to IGI Records of LDS was born about 1783 of Upper Shervone, Glassary, Argyll and on January 16, 1808 married Catherine MacArthur. Does your family bible contain any information on John MacTavish or perhaps the children of Johm and his wife Catherine. I am also very interested in the lineage of Mary McKellar which you mention. My ggGrandparents were Mary McArthur born 1788 and John McKellar born 1786 born and married March 23, 1811 in Kilmichael Glassary. I believe that John's parents were Mary McKellar and John McKellar who were married January 1, 1766 Kilmodan Parish. Thanks again, Jean (McKellar) Hammond, London, Canada. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frances Fogarty" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 05, 2007 6:00 AM Subject: [ARGYLL] Upper Shirvin >I have a family bible in gaelic containing a list of children's births > at Upper Shirvin in the 18th and early 19th centuries which belonged to > my great grandparents. Ah! Kilmodan - now you're talking, Jean. :-) Having only random links with Kilmichael Glassary, my interest in the Shirvin was merely academic, but some Kilmodan McKellars are certainly linked to mine - and close to Lorna's as well, I believe. There were many of them, but I'll see if I've noted anyone down along the way who might be part of the family you are seeking. Intriguing to see how these McKellars got about. Loch Fyne, so still and serene now, must have been fairly swimming with our ancestors, ever rowing from one set of parish records to another... Throughout this thread I've been wondering where I might see an overview of Argyll parish boundaries at any one time in the past. I need it hanging on the wall here. I know roughly, but many a time have I thought someone was living a fair way away from his birthplace, only to find that that spot was only across the border in another parish. For example, my McKellars were never really far from Stralachlan, but their records turn up in Lochgoilhead Kilmorich, Inverchaolain - and Kilmodan - as well. (Kilmodan was only a quick nip down the glen to Glendaruel and Kilmorich was well on the way to Kilmichael Glassary.) And perusal of the older maps shows the homesteads were often closer than I thought. Fortunately, the ministers in Kilmodan and Inverchaolain liked writing, giving me potted family histories of who the groom's sisters and his cousins and his aunts were and where they actually lived, unlike the guy in Stralachlan & Strachur who often didn't even think it worth mentioning if the couple were otp. Grr.. My most recent example of shifted interest was when looking 'further afield' for my Sinclairs and McVeans. After all, Inveraray wasn't far from their usual stamping grounds and there were plenty of entries for them in the OPR index so maybe there were links. I knew this was even more likely as soon as I gained easier access to the OPRs and saw the actual addresses. Seeing Inveraray in the index, I naturally (?) had 'downtown' Inveraray in mind. Silly me...the address of some of these babes baptised in 'Inveraray', was Braleckan. Inveraray might not be far from Stralachlan, but Braleckan's virtually next door - in the hills above Furnace - and slap bang opposite Bailoure/Newton/Stralachlan where my McVeans and Sinclairs were fishermen for so many years. Bingo! Certainly worth further investigation. Can't you just see them rowing across in your mind's eye? I can get a rough idea of locations from the Statistical Accounts, but it would be so handy to have a parish boundary overview at hand. I know where to find most of the old maps, but does anyone have any ideas where I might see a legible parish boundary overview? I am pretty sure there is one in the collection you can access at www.nls.gov.uk but, offhand, I cannot remember which one. regards > Jill Bowis > www.benderloch.org.uk/forum - Ardchattan history, geology, ecology, > genealogy, weather, webcam, local forum > www.kintaline.co.uk - where we are, what we do: Kintaline Plant and > Poultry > Centre
