    3. I am interested in the McKIRDY name in that it was the name of my grandfather's second wife, who died whilst aborting a child. She was Williamina White McKIRDY b abt 1871, as she died aged 41 yrs. in 1912. Her parents were John McKIRDY who was a Blacksmith and Ann maiden surname VANCE. I've not pursued her parents' families. I do not know where Williamina was born. She died at Govanhill, a District of Glasgow and since my Grandmother's family came from Mull perhaps its not unreasonable to think that the McKIRDY name was a local Argyll name; maybe someone will say. Have a look at this URL which shows a map of the distribution of the McKIRDYs in GB in the 1881 Census to be pricipally in Argyll - as does the 1998 map. http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/Map.aspx?name=MCKIRDY&year=1881&altyear=1998&country=GB&type=name Regards Les

    3. That is most useful Les. Thank you very much. I put it to the test with other names, as you might imagine. Surprised at the result for my maternal name of DUN/DUNN without a vowel on the end of it.
