    3. Hi Jill, many thanks for your reply. I am trying to check the accuracy of a newspaper cutting I have inherited which I was told related to my ancestors. See below for a transcription of the cutting: [TO THE EDITOR OF THE ……. Edinburgh, 26 November 1908 SIR, -- I, along with other friends, read with much surprise the paragraph in your issue of the 21st inst., under the heading “A Memorial Iona Cross,” the cross being the one erected in Keil Churchyard, Morven, in memory of the Campbells of Barr. The writer of that paragraph must have been unaware of the history of that family to have made the statements regarding them which he has done, and which, in justice to that family, must be corrected. “These Campbells,” except by residence, were never “a Morven family,” nor were they ever in the “position of crofters.” Duncan Campbell of Barr (great grand-father of the late Misses Campbell, Jura Cottage, Tobermory) was a younger son of Duncan Campbell of Sonachan, and resided at Glen Barr, Craignish, his wife being Ann Campbell, daughter of Colin Campbell of Achnaba. Mrs Campbell was well known as the writer of Gaelic poems and hymns (one of the latter is still known, “Laoidh Bean a’ Bharra” – i.e. , The Lady of Barr’s Hymn). Mrs Campbell’s brother, the Rev. Colin Campbell, was parish minister of Ardchattan, and was celebrated as an astronomer, being a friend and correspondent of Sir Isaac Newton. Mrs Ann Campbell’s husband, Duncan Campbell, Glenbarr, was the second son of Donald Campbell of Sonachan, the elder son, Robert, being father of the late Mr Robert Campbell, Sonachan, the last of his ????? who some twenty years ago made Lord Archibald Campbell his heir. The younger , Duncan Campbell (grand-father of the Misses Campbell) went on his marriage to the farm of Mungostle, Morven, when he changed the name of the farm to Barr, in memory of his childhood’s home. His wife, whom he married on the 3rd of January, 1775, was Mary, eldest daughter of Duncan Campbell, thirteenth laird of Glenfeochan. Their children were all born at Barr, Morven. There were five sons and five daughters, viz.:- 1 John, lieutenant in the 84th Regiment died at the Cape of Good Hope, 2 Donald, General, R.M. , died at Southsea, 18?7 |note possibly 1857 although if his age was correct then he was born out of marriage if the marriage date is correct| , aged 84 years, 3 and 4 (twins). Capt. James, R.M., married Flora Campbell, Morven. Duncan, Captain, R.M., died in Glasgow 5 Alexander, Captain, 91st Regiment, died at Tobermory. Margaret married Mr Morrison, Annabella, Ann, Catherine, and Colina, were all unmarried. The much respected ladies of Jura Cottage, Tobermory, have been laid to rest in the Keil Churchyard, beside their grand parents, their parents, and other members of their family. Their father, Captain James, and his brave soldier brothers, and after them the Misses Campbell, his daughters owned a pedigree that could stand alongside of any of the old Argyllshire families – their grandfather a Sonachan, their grandmother a Glenfeochan, sister of Colonel James Campbell, the fourteenth laird, who sold the estate of Glenfeochan in 1801, after it had been (by inheritance) in possession of the family for nearly five centuries. Enough has been said to show that the status of the Campbells of Barr, Morven, was very far from being such as your correspondent made it out to be. – I am, etc., T.J.C.M ---------- There is an entry in the Argyll Archives which relates to the Campbells of Barr: From: Brian Maye < bmaye@ozemail.com.au> Subject: [ARGYLL] Re: Campbell in Barr Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 10:54:07 +0100 To Doris in Ontario This does not seem to directly link to your query on John Campbell, but the mention of Barr rang a bell and I send you this transcript of a headstone in Lochline Cemetery that I jotted down in Sept 2000. They may be connected. I am seeking a Peggy Campbell who married a Dugald McLachlan and whose eldest dau was born 1826 when they were living around Lochaline. Anne Maye Celtic cross Pediment .. Campbells, Barr In memory of James Campbell, Lieutenant Royal Marines died at Tobermory 1852 Flora Campbell his wife died at Tobermory 1886 Their son Duncan Campbell died in Australia 1903 their daughters Mary Campbell died at Tobermory 1906 Jessie Campbell died at Glenards 1907. ----------- Following from that I have searched the Mull genealogy site for census information for Flora and Jessie and found entries for James and his family which gave ages for Lt James (50), Flora (45), Duncan (13), Mary (12) and Jessie (8) in 1841, and James (65), Flora (54), Mary (19), Jessie (18) in 1851. I have checked the 1841 census entry in Scotlandspeople and also found that the 1851 entry isn't available on line. The 1891 census from Scotlandspeople also shows Mary and Jessie at Jura Cottage, Tobermory which seems to tie in with the cutting. If anyone has other information relating to James, his family, and his brothers and sisters or connections to further up in the tree that would be really useful. It would eb useful if there was further information about the cemetery at Lochaline. I am not sure that the cutting is completely accurate, and therefore need to test each level as I go. Best Wishes Duncan Duncan & Pam McMillan

Is that just the entry for that place -- is there a missing parish? I have added the Craignish mentioned to the map so you can see some more of the geography. Glen Barr will not be the more obvious Glenbarr which is much much further south. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=116030731731140994898.0004587d1f5d15b75a737&ll=56.211287,-5.541916&spn=1.072298,2.471924&z=9 I hope you find some help, and if I come across anything in the Ardchattan archives ever I will let you know. regards Jill Bowis www.benderloch.org.uk/forum - One Place Study on Ardchattan history, geology, ecology, genealogy, weather, webcam, local forum www.kintaline.co.uk - where we are, what we do: Kintaline Plant and Poultry Centre www.bowis.co.uk - all our family trees and a One Name Study on Bowis
