    3. Hello Argyll!! Two questions about Scotland's People. Can any one tell me why some certificates have a Statutory number and some do not? What is the Timeline feature used for and if I use it will I be able to see the certificates again, and how? Janet

I have been puzzled because if I want to look at a certain person again I click on Names and get them in alphabetical order then find the appropriate name pages. But before the listing starts at Blue (I have no 'A's in my tree!) and continues alphabetically it always puts a few names which appear to be at random before the Blue pages. Does anyone know why? Thanks, Mary

    3. Hello ladies and list, My experience with Scotland's People suggests they'd be happy to give you a full explanation if you mail them with your questions. Meantime, though I can't answer them myself, I do have a couple of comments. I'm not entirely sure which number you mean in your question on statutory numbers. All my SP certs have a number of sorts, be it a census number, OPR or statutory record number, those last applying only, of course, to BDM records post-1855 when statutory registration began. Maybe you're referring to something else? As for the timeline, I must admit the first time I clicked on that I was half-expecting some amazing horizontal multimedia happening, whereas what it seems to do is list the certs I've viewed in chronological order. As a finding aid, this could be very handy, if I bothered to use it but for some reason I only ever put about ten in, of the literally hundreds of records I've found. Maybe I should sit down one rainy afternoon and click 'em all into the timeline... but then again, maybe not. Certainly, if the records are in your timeline you can view them again, as you can from your list of records viewed. However, what I find most useful and surely one of the most valuable reasons for using SP, is that I can download the documents I view and keep them in my own system! If I so choose, I can print them out on whatever paper I like and, at 1 pound sterling a time, this is infinitely cheaper than the 7 pounds it still costs to send for my English records and the 10 pounds that Scottish OPRs used to cost before SP put them online a year or two ago. Not to mention the time it saves. An absolute godsend for those of us who live too far away to visit the archives and trawl them ourselves. I hope this makes sense and answers at least some part of your questions. Look forward to hearing anything more you might discover, on or off the list.
