I have just joined this list as a result of following a trail that started in East Dereham, Norfolk, with the marriage in 1867 of a twig on my tree to a Grace MACKIE, born Scotland. The trail led to another marriage, this time in Cullen, Banff, Scotland, viz: Colin ADGE married Isobel DAVIDSON on 5 Jun 1798 in Cullen. I can continue the trail via Isobel without problems ( Scotlandspeople and Family Search) but have drawn a complete blank with Colin (Scotlandwide). In the marriage entry he is described as a "Soldier in the 5th Argyleshire Fencible Regiment (sic)" and stated as producing a certificate from the commanding officer at Cullen that he is a single man and under immediate marching orders. >From a brief history of 'Fencible Regiments' it appears that the 5th Argyllshire was raised principally in Argyll by the head of the Campbells. Can anyone offer anything that might help in tracing Colin ADGE? For example, is ADGE (or variant) an Argyll name and is there a source (other than Scotlandpeople) available for researching appropriate records? My thanks for reading thus far and for any help you may be able to offer. Cheers, Cliff of Coventry
