Bound from Oban to Glasgow. General cargo. About 100 persons saved. Lost 21 July 1869, 7.15am. Sanda Island about 1/2 mile north west of lighthouse. wind south, thick fog. Cause of wreck, thick fog. 'Struck on a reef of rock. The passengers were all landed on the island with their luggage & a number of sheep by the steamers own boats. At 5pm the CLANSMAN began to fill & the stern sank till the paddle boxes were nearly covered. The crew are safe. The cargo, consisting of tar, butter, wool, &c., is being washed ashore. (Glasgow, Sept. 21 1882)."
