A completely revised transcript of the 1841 Coll census using data extracted from official (GRO) census records for the Parish of Tyree & Coll now replaces the former incomplete transcript on the Isle of Coll genealogy website at www.collgenealogy.com . The new version corrects errors in township names and the allocation of dwellings between townships, and includes the 80 persons, mostly in the western end of the island, who were omitted from the original version. If your missing ancestors came from Breachacha, Caoles, Grimisary, Ballyhough, Cornaigmore, Cornaigbeg, Bousd or Sorisdale you might find them here. Also added to the Coll Censuses page of the website is a transcript of the explanatory statement by Mr Alexander Stewart, the local schoolmaster appointed to manage the 1841 census in Coll. He noted that at the time of the census about 50 island residents were on the mainland seeking work. The number of these absentees was balanced to some extent by visitors from Tiree who had come to Coll to cart peat back to their own island. Unfortunately for those seeking missing ancestors, the visitors from Tiree were not identified as such in the census returns. ____________________________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia Isle of Tiree Genealogy: www.tireegenealogy.com Isle of Coll Genealogy: www.collgenealogy.com
