Hi all Various Listers have commented on the OPR & Death records (1538-1854) now to be found on the (Scottish Government's) ScotlandsPeople web-site. Unlike Baptisms and Marriages it was not a legal requirement (by the Kirk) of the Session Clerks to keep a record of deaths/interments within their Parishes consequently few did so. Hence our reliance on pre 1855 MIs (Memorial Inscriptions). NB There was no requirement for the Minister to keep any such records. To find out which Parishes did keep Death/burial records enter the ScotlandsPeople web-site http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ but DO NOT Log-in. Click on "Deaths and Burials 1538-1854" this will take you to the "What's In Ihe Database" tab. Click on Extant OPRs to give a List of Parish Registers. If you page down there is a List of OPR's by parish within each county. Click on the relevant OPR Reference ie 492-551 for Dunbartonshire & Argyll. This will give you the dates of bmd's by Parish within these Counties. Click on OPR Death Years by parish to see the available death/burial event years in the registers. Hope this helps those who are not au-fait with ScotlandsPeople which I personally recommend over certain Commercial web-sites.
