    1. [ARGYLL] Gaelic?
    2. D & S Tryk
    3. This isn't REALLY genealogy, I guess. I'm trying to find out how a (presumably) Gaelic word is spelled. My mother used to refer to our cat "feching" -- when he was hissing loudly. The "ch" pronounced as in "loch." So -- can anyone tell me if that's Scots Gaelic, and if so how it's spelled? Sheila in Missouri

    1. [ARGYLL] Old Glen Nevis Burial ground
    2. The Pools
    3. Hello I wonder if anyone would know where the burial records are for the Old Glen Nevis Burial Ground that is up the Glen Nevis road. I do have the pre 1855 M I s I have some McMillans and Camerons buried there, and Im sure there will also be some who do not have headstones buried there as well. I have asked Mr Ewan Cameron whose land is near by but he does not know if they still exist. The burial ground was not administrated by the local council as it was on private land.I have also written to the West Highland Museum, who were not able to help. I have visted the grave yard several times and noticed there was an artificial flower arrangment on one of the three graves, that are all together. The inscriptions read; STMO Mary Cameron who died 2 March 1810 aged 47yrs spouse to Angus McMillan, weaver, Nevis bridge. This stone is erected here by their son Duncan McMillan weaver, Glencoe. This headstone is flat on the ground. These are my gggg grandparents. Erected by Duncan McMillan Tayfurnist Glencoe, and Lucy Cameron his wife imo their beloved son Donald, died 1 Jan 1870 26yrs. IMO Angus McMillan who died Tayfurnist Glencoe 7 Feb 1850, 50 years. Erected by sisters Christina and Elizabeth. Am grateful for any help or suggestions about this. We didnt have mailing lists when I started this research. Thanks Margaret NZ

    3. Hi List, Does anyone know how to find a mariner on the 1841, or other census? This is my ongoing problem - I still want to find my Duncan McPhail and here is all I know about him. His father and brother (if he's the right family) were mariners and he is described as a seaman at his marriage. Born Gigha 1819 (I know who I HOPE were his mother and father) but no birth/baptism record found. Raised Campbeltown but never found on 1841. Married Campbeltown 1843. After the 1881 I can find no sign of him anywhere - no death record. Thanks for any help. 3. Les, if Sheila is looking for Auchnacone in Glen Coe, it may be easier to look it up under the seemingly current spelling Achnacon, which can be seen at the Grid Ref you give, about 2km SE of Glencoe. If this is the place that Sheila wants, I also would like to know this girl's family. My ancestors lived up the glen running south from Achnacon and would have passed through and known Achnacon as their nearest 'civilisation'. 3. Hi Les. Quite agree. If you'd like a question, I could reprise one about burials at DALNESS, at the top of Glen Etive. For those not previously in this loop, there is a burial site at Dalness. Little is known about it, apparently. It is suspected that at least some are buried there who might otherwise have been buried at Eilean Munde, the traditional burial ground in Loch Leven. I can't go and look at it myself unfortunately but I imagine it is at least partly overgrown. I think it is opposite Dalness House, more or less. It would be a close thing as to whether it is on the National Trust land or private. If this has not been explored I think it deserves to be. What do others think? 3. Les Horn wrote: >> Hi all >> >> Is anybody there or have you all gone into hibernation. This is the >> quietest I've ever known this List - a week without a post !! Any spare history moments I have had have been concentrating on the Parish Project. I have got more of the records we have harvested and collected here, into a bit better order and hoping someone might be able to have some time to make a coherent library of the contents, and get more of it onto the forum. The forum is getting busier, and it would be great if anyone here has the time, inclination, knowledge to add their contributions to it. Whether its information about the way of life, the history and politics, the individual places, transcribing things like MI images, wills etc, there is plenty for anyone to do to add to the whole idea. I was completely gobsmacked the other day when an eminent gaelic historian and lecturer gave me a huge compliement on the structure and concept of the site, as the best local history site he had ever seen. I was blown away, and protested that we are so much at the beginning of a long journey, and there are many better, but it was really really lovely to have the recognition of the aims of the project from such as he. I am aware that if its progress is left to me alone, then it will be painfully slow, I have so little time I can afford to give it. I am also aware that much that we all bring to the site of the background to the area and lives will be relevant to many other parishes in the county, so its got much wider relevance in the long term. Otherwise I am up to my ears in winter work around the farm here, in the office for the business and the Local Producers network - our first market of the year is this week. I am really looking forward to welcoming any of you who are visiting the area to our wee place here this year. regards Jill Bowis www.lorn.org.uk Local Origins Rural Network - Local Producers Market & Business/Community Network www.kintaline.co.uk - where we are, what we do: Kintaline Plant and Poultry Centre www.benderloch.org.uk/forum - Ardchattan history, geology, ecology, genealogy, weather, webcam, local forum

Other births were in Ardchattan, Kilchrenan and Glenorchy, so they don't reveal anything about this one. And two births are in the family Bible but not in any OPR (Nanny and Mary). Can anyone help with this mystery, please? Thanks Regards Lorna
