My father John McCormick Beaton was born on Mull in 1912 but later moved to the mainland, probably between 1918 and 1924. I think the family moved to the Inveraray area and probably lived in Glen Shira. I'm sure my father mentioned going to school at Cladich. Has anyone got any info about that area at that time. I would be very grateful. Sheena Allan
Hello fellow listers, I joined the list today, so I thought I would say hello, and ask if there is anyone here who could help me with a brick wall I have had for the passed few years. I have two ancestors that I have traced that lived in the North Wales area circa 1800's. For year we assumed they originally came from Dunoon, but I couldn't find any trace of them ever being there. Last night by accident I found out that they actually came from Campbeltown. For years I have been looking in completely the wrong place. I wonder if there is anyone out there who might be able to help. My brick wall is; JOHN CAMPBELL - born circa 1771 in Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scotland. JOHN died 15 April 1850 in Penyffordd Nth Wales. Burial: 1850, Dyserth, Nth Wales. Occupation: 1807, John is employed as a Gardener at Llewerllyd. He married JANET DOBIE. Born circa 1778 in Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scotland. JANET died 02 June 1865 at Llys Farm, Meliden, Nth Wales. Burial: 1865, Dyserth, Nth Wales. Children of JOHN CAMPBELL and JANET DOBIE are: ALEXANDER CAMPBELL, Born: 16 March 1798, Pendref, Rhuddlan. Baptism: 23 March 1798, Rhuddlan JAMES HENRY CAMPBELL, Born: 04 August 1799, Rhuddlan. Baptism: 18 August 1799, Rhuddlan. CHARLES CAMPBELL, . Born: 17 March 1807.Married: JANE PEACOCK, 14 January 1837, Abergele. Witnesses where James Henry Campbell and Frances Trapceirn MARY CAMPBELL, Born: 1813, Rhuddlan, Nth Wales. Died: 12 June 1887. Married: THOMAS JOHN WILLIAMS. Son of JOHN WILLIAMS and ANNE HUGHES. He was born 1808 in Cwm, Nth Wales. Baptism: 25 January 1808, Cwm and died 08 March 1887. ANNE FRANCES CAMPBELL, Born: May 1806. ELIZABETH CAMPBELL, Born: 14 November 1810, Rhuddlan. Baptism: 02 December 1810, Rhuddlan PETER CAMPBELL, Born: 23 April 1815. Died: Dyserth, Nth Wales. Married: ELIZABETH DAVIES, 27 October 1838, Rhuddlan. Born: Kings Head Inn, Rhuddlan. Married: HENRY WILLIAMS, Brother of Thomas John Williams. I would be grateful if anyone one the list can find anything about JOHN CAMPBELL or JANET CAMPBELL (Nee DOBIE). Many thanks Regards Kevin Williams
Hi, Les, Well, it LOOKS like "carpenter." It's an OPR listing for a birth, 19 May 1830, Mary, daughter to John Cameron carpenter Trislaig? Ardgour & Margreat Cameron his wife. The Mary I want should have been born in about 1836 or 1837, but this is the only one with parents of the right names. Or presumably the right names. One never knows for sure on death certificates! Thanks for the clue about the farm/hamlet/village name. Sheila in Missouri (where it snowed today on top of fruit blossoms and flowering bulbs)
Sheila asked > I give up. I can't read this place, let alone find it. In 1830, John Cameron, carpenter, apparently lived at Hislaig? Lislaig? in Ardgour. Any ideas? This is most certainly Trislaig in Ardgour which is directly accross Loch Linnhe from Fort William. Although in the 1841 Kilmallie Census for Trislaig the John Camerons listed are Ag Labs and not Carpenters. Perhaps Sheila could enlighten us as to where she read about Hislaig or whatever. Two new articles by Gene Lamont, a descendant of Tiree emigrants, have been added to his masterpiece work "They Came from Tiree" (a scholarly account of the history of Tiree from 7000 BC to the famine years and mass emigrations of the 1800s), on the Isle of Tiree Genealogy website at www.tireegenealogy.com. The new articles are "Tiree in the Viking Age", which reviews and interprets the impact of Viking raids and occupation on Tiree and other islands of the South Hebrides, and "The Lamonts of Tiree", which traces the rise and fall of Clan Lamont in mainland Scotland and the escape to refuge of Lamont 1640s Civil War survivors to Mull and then Tiree. Even if you are not of Lamont ancestry, this is an excellent account of a turbulent period in Scots history. To download the articles click on 'Tiree History' on the Homepage of the website and follow the links. I thank Gene for sharing with us the results of his many years of research, and putting it all together in such readable articles. ____________________________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia Isle of Tiree Genealogy: www.tireegenealogy.com Isle of Coll Genealogy: www.collgenealogy.com
The Campbeltown Public Library has copies (film) of 'The Campbeltown Journal'. I am not sure of the date range but I searched 1852/53 copies during a visit in 2005. Regards Denis McCarthy, Mackay Q. Aust.

I have the following two baptism records from Scotlandspeople - Solomon McCOLL on 20 Aug 1768 ( I believe he is my GGGG Grandfather) Margaret MCCOLL on 20 Mar 1771 to Dugald McCOLL and Janet LIVINGSTON of Killean, Lismore. I can't find a marriage or baptisms for Dugald and Janet as it seems the IGI and Scotlandspeople only have marriages in this Parish starting in 1767 and baptisms starting in 1751. Does anyone know whether registers for Lismore & Appin exist prior to these dates and if so, how could I access them please? I did find a marriage of Dugald McCOLL & Janet McCOLL at Inverfolla/Inverpholla, Appin on 4 Jan 1768 which would fit the timeframe to be Solomon's and Margaret's parents and I wonder whether Janet's surname on the marriage record may have been incorrectly recorded as McCOLL? - probably just wishful thinking on my part! Lesley asked > can anyone with knowledge of the local area advise if > > 1. there were local papers for the Kintyre region during the above > (1841-1851) period > > 2. If there are existing copies available to view nowadays. The Oban Times - "The Regional Newspaper for the Highlands, Islands and Argyll" was first published, as The Illustrated Oban Times and Argyllshire Advertiser, on 1st July 1861 and copies microfiched, but not indexed, from that date . The Oban Times Group currently publishes the Campbeltown Courier which was first published in 1873. As far as I can ascertain there were no earlier Kintre papers. Prior to this time notable events in Argyll, and those of interest to those in Glasgow with Argyll origins, were picked up by the Glasgow Herald. Unfortunately, although published from 1st Jan 1783, the Herald is only indexed from 1889 onwards. Alison, Further to my earlier mail trying to find the James LITSTER about whom you asked, here is what else I saw on LITSTERs in Dunoon. I first thought that the fact that James the Younger's mother Margaret was with him both times suggested he is not the same immediate family of James the Elder. A cousin at the most. (However, this query is resolved further down as you will see.) 1891 James LITSTER the Younger b c1869 is a joiner b Bridgeton Lanarkshire, living at Kirn Bank Cottage with mother Margaret S Litster 64 b Cathcart RFW. In 1901, this James is at Shore Road, Kirn Bank Cottage his mother is still there 76, but he has married Martha Cumming 24 b Grangemouth Stirlingshire and has two children Margaret S Litster 2 and Alexr C Lister under 1 month. 1891 James LITSTER the Elder b c1809 at Tollcross Lanarkshire is living on private means at Clover Bank Dunoon with daughters Agnes 33 and Isabella M 30 In 1901 none of this family group appear in Dunoon, which is not surprising if this was the James who died in 1892. 1891 See my last mail and above. 1881 James the Elder is at Shore, Clover Bank Dunoon, recorded as a house factor from Glasgow LKS. With him are Mrs. Litster 60 William Litster 33 Music Teacher b Glasgow Agnes 23 a Music Teacher b Kirn Isabella 20 and Fraser C Litster 5 grandson b Aberdeen City 1871 Not found James the Elder yet. Aha! Mystery of missing brother solved: in 1871, this is James the Younger at the same address age 3, with his parents Margaret Litster 45 and WILLIAM LITSTER 70, so this could be the brother of James the Elder. Wm is from Jobcross [sic] Lanark, (which is probably Tolcross as for James the Elder in 1891). 1861 Strange, James the Elder may be weirdly indexed in 71, because in 1861 they are there are 44 Sea Shore Dunoon as follows: James Litster 52 agent Mary Litster 40 William Litster 13 Ellen Litster 7 Agnes Litster 3 Isabella M Litster 1 mo (Agnes & Isabella born Kirn, the others including Ellen all Glasgow). In 1851 the family appears to be at 4 Dale Street Calton Lanarkshire with a couple more children who may or may not have survived James Litster 42 spirit dealer Mary Litster 33 Mary Litster 14 servant William Litster 3 Robert Litster 8 months Not far away at 136 Dalmarnock Road Calton, is a William Litster 50 b Tolcross, 'spins' merchant (another spirit merchant perhaps?' Helen 32 James 19 Helen 17 Wm 14 James 12 George 7 Elizabeth Douglas [Puzzling/intriguing index; might be interesting to see the original in an attempt to track down who's whose child and whether they are the family you are trying to trace. And if James 12 is the guy with Mother Margaret at the end of the century, in Dunoon, where is she now?] 1841 First I thought I couldn't find them in 1841, but this has to be the same household: James LITSTER 30 a Sp Deal in Dale Street Margaret Litster 30 and James LITSTER 6 months. I don't know when you'll see this, but I hope you can work out whether and which if any of these are the family in which you are interested, Alison. And how many wives James the Elder had and which children they mothered... If you're interested, the statutory records will doubtless tell you more. Happy hunting, Katie de Haan The Netherlands
