    3. All of my paternal grandfathers line come from Nether Lorn but none of my my direct ancestors I know of had headstones. One mistake I made in my early days of research was to confuse Oban, the modern town today, with Oban Seil . Until the 1890's Oban was only a small hamlet    ----- Original Message ---- From: Liz Langmann <lizl@netactive.co.za> To: sct-argyll@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, June 6, 2009 10:29:15 PM Subject: [ARGYLL] MI's for Kilmelfort Hi all, is there anywhere that I could search MI's for Kilmelfort. 1. [ARGYLL] Neil Lang/Loynachan (1821 - 1901) & Agnes Mitchell (1822 - 1879); Campbeltown
    2. Sarah Galbraith
    3. Is anyone researching the descendants of Neil LANG or LOYNACHAN and his wife Agnes MITCHELL who married in Campbeltown in 1844? Neil Lang was a fisherman, born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland around 1821 to Neil Lang / Loynachan and Barbara MILLOY, both of whom appear to originate in Kintyre, either Campbeltown or Killean. Agnes Mitchell too was born in Greenock, around 1822, and her parents, Duncan Mitchell (fisherman) and Isobell MARTIN, both came from the Carradale area of Kintyre. Neil Lang and Agnes Mitchell had at least nine children, though two died in infancy. My information about the other children is incomplete, and I'd welcome information to help complete this line, though I have most of the relevant census records, etc. Outline information about the children is as follows: Neil Lang (1845 - 1930) was a fisherman in Campbeltown and married (1) Mary Elizabeth SILLERS and (2) Anne McKAY. He had at least seven children to his first wife. Isabella Lang (1846 - 1898) married (1) John McKay and (2) James ROBERTSON, and had at least one son to each of them. Barbara Lang (1848 - 1931) married a cabinet maker named Michael BROWN. She had one son who became an upholsterer and moved to Peebles, where he had two sons. Barbara died in Peebles. Duncan Lang (1858 - ) was a fisherman in Campbeltown. He married Isabella McKay in 1882 and had at least four children. Agnes Lang (1861 - ?) was a domestic servant in Greenock 1881, living with her sister Isabella. I've got no trace of her after that date. Mary Lang (1858 - 1936) married a Campbeltown fisherman named John McMillan (1858 - 1936). The couple had at least seven children, some of whom have descendants in Campbeltown. Catherine or Kate Lang (1867 - 1941) married Neil Galbraith McKENZIE, and had eleven children, most of whom married and had children. I'd be delighted to learn more about descendants of Neil Lang and Agnes Mitchell, and can share quite a bit of data about their ancestors and siblings. With best regards Sarah Galbraith

    3. BlankHi all I am interested in an Ann McIntyre, from Glencoe ARL, who was married to a John Cameron. The following details are from her entry in the Register of Deaths for St Giles, Edinburgh. She died on 10/12/1875 age 85 (b1790) at 6 Lonsdale Terr., Marchmont, Edinburgh. Widow of John Cameron, Farmer. Her parents were John McIntyre, farmer (dec'd) + Clementina McNab (dec'd). The Informant was her son R M Cameron (Robert ?) Ann McIntyre would appear to already been widowed by the 1841 Census when she, and 4 children, are at Milne's Court (off the Royal Mile), Edinburgh. Can anyone tell me anything about this family. Many thanks Les ========================== Lochaber and North Argyll Family History Group - http://tinyurl.com/y6te7n e-mail - landnafhg@fsmail.net ==========================

    3. Hello List, I am trying to find anyone related to Donald Campbell and his wife Catherine ( nee McGregor) who farmed at Inverarary in the 1850's or there about. They had five children: Duncan, born 22/7/1867 my grandfather. Donald, born 20/9/1869. Janet, born 6/12/1871. John, born 21/10/1873. Malcolm, born 3/12/1875. Both Duncan and John came to Western Australia, but I have no idea what happened to the other members of the family. Hoping that there is some one out there who is related and also searching. 3. Hi everyone,   I am sending a link to CanadaGenWeb's cemetery project in Canada as I am sure it will help those of you whose ancestors seem to have disappeared, when they actually ended up in Canada in the 1800's.     This notice came to me earlier today with the announcement that additional monuments had been photographed.  I immediately went onto the site and looked up the Kilmartin cemetery, and looked at a marker for a 46 year old McCallum who was born in 1810 and died in 1856.  It is a very old marker and difficult to see the bottom where there appears to be information about possibly where the person was born. There is the name of a person who is willing to go out to the cemetery to do lookups, and there is also a way of accessing OCFA, the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid to find where ancestors are likely to be buried.  Not all cemeteries are on, but many are.  Although I didn't look today to see if there is one for Kilmartin, other groups are busy collecting monumental inscriptions.   Cheers, Margaret in Toronto   CanadaGenWeb's Cemetery Project http://cemetery.canadagenweb.org

    3. A completely revised transcript of the 1841 Coll census using data extracted from official (GRO) census records for the Parish of Tyree & Coll now replaces the former incomplete transcript on the Isle of Coll genealogy website at www.collgenealogy.com . The new version corrects errors in township names and the allocation of dwellings between townships, and includes the 80 persons, mostly in the western end of the island, who were omitted from the original version. If your missing ancestors came from Breachacha, Caoles, Grimisary, Ballyhough, Cornaigmore, Cornaigbeg, Bousd or Sorisdale you might find them here. Also added to the Coll Censuses page of the website is a transcript of the explanatory statement by Mr Alexander Stewart, the local schoolmaster appointed to manage the 1841 census in Coll. He noted that at the time of the census about 50 island residents were on the mainland seeking work. The number of these absentees was balanced to some extent by visitors from Tiree who had come to Coll to cart peat back to their own island. Unfortunately for those seeking missing ancestors, the visitors from Tiree were not identified as such in the census returns. ____________________________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia Isle of Tiree Genealogy: www.tireegenealogy.com Isle of Coll Genealogy: www.collgenealogy.com

    3. Hello List, I am trying to find out more details of the possible birthplace of GGG Grandfather John McKeich/McKeith. His 1803 marriage record describes him as 'of Arnigle' On the assumption that this is the same as Arnicle, can anyone tell me what would have been there in the late 1700's / early 1800's. Was is a farm, hamlet, village or what ? The reason for asking is that i can find no birth details for my GGG GF in any of the obvious sources, there are a number of other McKeith/ McKeich individuals that also appear to be "of Arnicle". So was Arnicle of sufficient size that there would be several families living there or is it possible that it would be just the one family with the same surname ( spelling variations excepted) ? Who would have been the landowner ? Duke of Argyll ? McAllister of Barr ? and are there likely to be any estate records publicly available? While I'm asking is there the same information out there for Killocraw, Margmonagach and Bealochantuy as these are the locations at which many of the children were born. My GGG GF was described as a Shepherd, what would have been his position regarding landholding - would he have been a tenant or something else? here's hoping someone can help thanks in advance keith leonard

    1. [ARGYLL] Assistance with Place Names Please
    2. Paul Crewe
    3. Hi everyone, In the Ancestry 1851 census, I have Archibald Whyte (should be Whiteford) living at Clachan, Rasay (sic) who is recorded as being born at "Kr Kassan, Argyllshire". In the Ancestry 1861 census, I have him (actually transcribed this time as Archibald Whiteford!) living at Fearns, Raasay and this time his place of birth is recorded as "MacHermon, Argyllshire". Can anyone please help me with where he actually may have been born, as I can't fathom what these places actually were. Thank you very much, Paul

    3. Dear Frank, Harold & Sandy, Thankyou for your advice concerning the birthplace of Flora Beaton. I have viewed an image of the original census and will report the errors to Ancestry. Frank, thanks for your detailed reply, it was extremely helpful.
