    1. [ARGYLL] Glasgow census.
    2. John McIntyre.
    3. Greetings All, Would anyone be kind enough to look up 1841 and later Glasgow census returns please? I'm seeking data on some Sinclair siblings, possibly Phillip, Donald, Margarate and Jean/Jane. In March 1840, John Sinclair, who the previous year, with wife, three children and three sisters, had arrived in Adelaide on the Palmyra, wrote to a brother and sister in Glasgow about the voyage and the death of a son. I would like to know who these Glasgow siblings were! The only known sisters of John went to Australia with him, and one would hardly have had time to return to Scotland by March. Could the 'sister' have been a sister-in-law?? I have no knowledge of the death of a son on the Palmyra. The only known son of John was born in Edinburgh shortly before sailing, and died in Australia in 1911. Perhaps he was a twin!! Any data would be greatly appreciated. With thanks, John McIntyre, Australia.

    3. Hi all Having previously been reluctant to put their publications on-line there are now some on-line as .pdf docs. Have a look at this URL for SRS publications you can view on-line. It names each of 39 publications. http://openlibrary.org/a/OL2533482A/Scottish-Record-Society?books_page=0 Altenatively this URL gives access to 55 which, unfortunately, are not indexed and the Keywords: for most of them are "Registers of births, etc. -- Scotland" http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=creator%3A%22Scottish%20Record%20Society%2C%20Edinburgh%22 Regards Les ========================== Lochaber and North Argyll Family History Group - http://tinyurl.com/y6te7n e-mail - landnafhg@fsmail.net ==========================

    3. Greetings Listers, What do lightning, children and sticky snacks have in common? They are all potentially FATAL to your data. Those years and years of researching, travelling, corresponding, digging, mystery solving, interviewing and irreplaceable photo scans - gone. We're talking from laptop to doorstop in nothing flat. It happened to me - it can happen to you. Get vaccinated! Copy those files to CD's or data sticks now! Have no clue what I'm talking about - no worries. When the grandkids come over waving kool-aid around your keyboard - have their parents archive your system first. Ask the geek in the local computer store how to use a memory stick. You should just happen to have the computer in the car in case he gets so exasperated explaining that he offers to do it himself - tee hee. Save a copy of your data - You can do it, you should do it, so go do it. Have a great summer! Cathy DiPietro, list admin

    2. Mary Paton
    3. Hi Les, Thanks for both sites - as I said to Philip I thought it would be the same but the OPR definitely says Knocknahall. The reference is interesting and it also shows that Rhunahaorine was on the Largie estate. I still want to find an inhabitant or tenant list for the Largie Estate but when I wrote to them by snail mail I got no reply. >As Philip says this is Knocknaha (GB Grid Ref NR689179) >http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm > >Have a look at this URL : http://tinyurl.com/Knocknahall Pages 85 & 86 >give details of Knocknahall in 1777. 1. Re: [ARGYLL] New OPR Death and Burial records
    2. Les Horn
    3. Hi all Various Listers have commented on the OPR & Death records (1538-1854) now to be found on the (Scottish Government's) ScotlandsPeople web-site. Unlike Baptisms and Marriages it was not a legal requirement (by the Kirk) of the Session Clerks to keep a record of deaths/interments within their Parishes consequently few did so. Hence our reliance on pre 1855 MIs (Memorial Inscriptions). NB There was no requirement for the Minister to keep any such records. To find out which Parishes did keep Death/burial records enter the ScotlandsPeople web-site http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ but DO NOT Log-in. Click on "Deaths and Burials 1538-1854" this will take you to the "What's In Ihe Database" tab. Click on Extant OPRs to give a List of Parish Registers. If you page down there is a List of OPR's by parish within each county. Click on the relevant OPR Reference ie 492-551 for Dunbartonshire & Argyll. This will give you the dates of bmd's by Parish within these Counties. Click on OPR Death Years by parish to see the available death/burial event years in the registers. Hope this helps those who are not au-fait with ScotlandsPeople which I personally recommend over certain Commercial web-sites. 3. Hi all, If a family came from Campbeltown, Argyll on the Isle of Kintyre, which parish register would they be located in and where are there burial places and how many in Campbeltown? Unfortunately I cannot establish who Alexander McPherson's parents were and when he was born. I have his marriage to Marion McNeill on 2nd December 1845 and they came to Australia around 1854. I also cannot find his death here in Victoria. His wife died in 1875. Any leads for me would be appreciated. Thank you. Sandra Victoria, Australia

    3. Christine, I have a Janet Leitch "from Glenorchy" according to family story. She seems to be the one baptised in Kilchrenan October 13 1771, the daughter of Angus Leitch and Anne MacArthur. Janet married John MacKinnon around 1790. Their daughter Margaret was born around 1793 -- no record found. She married Alexander MacNiven. Any connections? 2. Janet
    3. Jill: I always think its worth while sharing; searching experiences bearing in mind that criteria changes and its worth trying again. I agree also the "show options" link might cause an expectation that is worth a caution. It doesn't block all the negative links we might find having clicked on that "show options" as if being led to something else is a positive excitement to information we want to find and see. Not necessarily so as others will agree with what they have experienced and found. I think we need to heed what our fellow hobbyists find. I really do think that for as much as websites might appear user friendly we should treat them with the same caution as we treat Family Search, that it might be a useful start for our searches. For the same reasons, always pursing better and more reliable record of what we are pursuing Has to be the best record we require for inserting into our GEDCOM which requires source records each year of our searches against the name of the individual. Maybe something I have said has caused someone to question what they are doing in a positive way. I think its worthwhile if we share information and how to record and substantiate the source of that record. I am willing to help where I can but I know there are people like Gill who are well able to do so also. In any event its what the hobby genealogy is all about that we join forces to help others where we can. As an example Les Horn found my Gt grandfather working as a Butler away from his birth place, and with the aid of Ancestry I was able to trace his footsteps and his finding my Gt grandmother working away from her birth place in Mull to up to the date of their marriage and stabilised marriage to be able to raise a family together to support my records, which is well worth it. Its the quality information such as this which is so worthwhile rather than finding a gap in time to the date of death without realising how they ended their last years.
