    1. [ARGYLL] BRODIE, Campbeltown
    2. mbg763
    3. Re-posting my interests. I am researching the BRODIE family, mostly descended from JOHN BRODIE (various spellings) from Rathlin Island who settled with his wife MARGARET KIARGAN and family in Campbeltown in the mid-1800s. I would be interested to hear from other descendants of this line, and even more delighted if anyone is able to give me information on John Brodie's own ancestry. 1. [ARGYLL] Re: "Free Presbyterian" records hunt
    2. Priscilla, You asked: > > Where might they have worshipped and celebrated christenings as a Free > Presbyterian in Argyllshire? In Scotland, the church is called the Free Church of Scotland. It became the United Free Church of Scotland after a merger in 1900. My ancestors were also members of this denomination. There appear to have been a number of Free Churches at that time in Argyll and elsewhere. > I've not been successful in locating any birth > records for either individual. Is that because they weren't members of the > Church of Scotland where there seemed to be more of an obligation to record > > and, in 1855, submit their registers to the civil government? Some of my ancestors show up on the records of both the Free Church and Church of Scotland. I haven't figured out exactly why yet, but I assume they were not baptized in both churches. :<) There are definitely records of the Free Church in the GRO, but they may not be there for all of the parishes. > Or am I not > finding them simply because it's too early for there to be consistent > records? That is possible, but you might also try the LDS Family Search site which also has the Scottish parish records from the GRO on their International Genealogical Index. Sometimes a different search engine looking at the same records will give you a different result. You might also look at surrounding counties. I'm not up on the historical geopolitics of Scotland, but the counties may have changed boundaries. Your ancestors claimed to come from Argyll, but when they were born, the boundaries may have been different. I'm thinking particularly of Bute or Buteshire. The current official name of the county is "Argyll and Bute."

    3. My apologies to the list but I don't know where else to post the query. :-) My sister-in-law asked me the other day if I knew what tartan, if any, people by the name of Barclay would be entitled to wear. I have a reasonably good book on Scottish tartans but Barclay is a name not listed. Any help would be appreciated. 3. To Win MacKenzie If your ancestor from Lochaline MOR was a quarryman I would look at the census for Ballachulish because there were large slate quarries there. The Tourist Info Centre at Ballachulish has a historical museum with artefacts and photographs of these quarries and much of the beautifully manicured lawns near the Centre are built on landfill into the lake from the rubble from these quarries. Like many occupations this one gave the quarriers a very low life expectancy because of the dust and the extremely hard labour. Anne Maye.

    3. My Alexander MOODY b. Argylshire about 1800 immigrated to New Brunswick and subsequently married Margaret Elizabeth MORRIS in 1828 who was also born in Argylshire approx 1807. They are identified in the NB census as "Free Presbyterian." Where might they have worshipped and celebrated christenings as a Free Presbyterian in Argyllshire? I've not been successful in locating any birth records for either individual. Is that because they weren't members of the Church of Scotland where there seemed to be more of an obligation to record and, in 1855, submit their registers to the civil government? Or am I not finding them simply because it's too early for there to be consistent records? I've found only two Alexander MOODYs on ScotsOrigins in this time period. One in Glasgow and one in Prestonpans. Neither of those two locations would be included in Arglyshire, right? Any suggestion where else to look? Thanks all :) Priscilla

    1. [ARGYLL] Re: Marriage/banns
    2. Jura R Sherwood
    3. In response to the question about the marriage and marriage banns. A couple of things to consider. First the IGI (which is an index only to the records of members deceased ancestors, who have had temple ordinances performed for them,) would list the source of the information. If the LDS extracted the record from the parish register the source number would begin with 'M' indicating marriage (a christening record begins with 'C'). Secondly: Records of Banns are not normally extracted because that doesn't prove that a marriage ever took place. If the record was submitted by an LDS member for their deceased ancestor, the source number would usually begin with a number such as 77 or 82 or 86 for instance. This indicates the year the record was submitted for temple ordinances. If I find a record like this, I order the microfilm of the parish record to see for myself because I don't trust other people's research. With regards to birth/christening - the same thing applies - if the LDS extracted the information from the parish register, they would use the christening record. If an LDS member submitted the info. they may have the birth date from another record. There is so much confusion about the LDS records and what the IGI really is. I hope this helps. Happy Ancestor Hunting - Jura

    1. [ARGYLL] Two dates for banns and marriage
    2. Donna Lou Ritter
    3. In response to the question about dates for marriage and banns: I have a couple who I think have a similar pattern. One is from Craignish parish, Malcolm MCPHERSON, and Marion/Sarah MCCALLUM is from Kilmartin. I've seen the microfilm from Craignish which looks like banns but no wedding date. Haven't yet had a chance to look at Kilmartin, but my guess is that is where they married. The actual quote from the microfilm image is: "March 16th 1782 Malcolm McPherson in this parish and Marrion McCallum in the parish of Kilmartin gave in their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage. John McPherson in Carranmore cautionary for the parties" Others conclude with "...and were married..." and give a date for the marriage. Since it appears that she lived in Kilmartin, I need to get that microfilm now to check. The LDS site doesn't make a distinction on their IGI listings between banns and marriage.. They also don't distinguish between birth and baptism dates which are sometimes apparent on the microfilms & sometimes not D.Lou Ritter
