    3. My Scottish ancestors came from Argyll to Elgin Co (which is where Aldborough Twp. is) a little later than yours. One of the really helpful sites is abstracts of Surrogate Court records--estate settlements. They are not searchable, but I have found so much helpful information about my family. I go back to them periodically and scroll through them again. I don't see any direct connection to your family although I have some peripheral connections to Black, McKillop, McLean, and Campbell families. My primary line is Munro. The URL is below. Good luck. http://www.library.elgin-county.on.ca/history/estate.html D. 3. My parents both trained as Registered Mental Nurses in the Argyll & Bute Asylum in the 1950s. I asked my father about burials, and this was his reply:: "There was a Poors House associated with the hospital which accommodated paupers and no doubt most of them would be elderly. It was situated at Aros House which, when I was there in the late fifties, was the nurses' home. As for burials, I expect most would be to Achnabreac, but if there were relatives arranging the funeral they would probably have the burial in their own local area, funds permitting. As the name suggests the catchment area was Argyll and Bute - quite a large area to cover." Achnabreac is the cemetery for the area, about a mile or two out of Lochgilphead, and still in use. Incidentally my paternal gt.gt. grandfather was a nurse and the Bandmaster at the A & B at the turn of the century, at the same time my maternal gt. grandmother was a patient there, after the loss of a child from which she never recovered. Hope this helps. Chris in Caithness, Scotland

    3. I think you will find that if they had family they will be buried in the family graveyard. Remember, in those days people were incarcerated for very trivial reasons (illegitimate babies etc.) My great great grandfather died in another asylum in Scotland - there because of his alcoholism but he was still buried in the family village. . 'Lochgilphead' as it was and still is colloquially called is the mental hospital for the whole of Argyll so people may have come from some distance away. I remember that when I searched the OPR for Kilmartin, Glassary parish many years back, I could not find William's baptism as the Register began 1746. My SMITH ancestors lived in Kilmartin, Ardrissaig and Lochgilphead for many generations and a great great aunt of mine, Sarah MCPHAIL knew of the line back to the William below. 1. [ARGYLL] Muckairn Parish Church; COLQUHOUN, CAMPBELL & MAC NIVEN
    2. Owen & Elizabeth Shearer
    3. Hello Mary Muckairn Parish Church is located in the village of Taynuilt, near the shore of Loch Awe & at the Oban end of the Pass of Brander, in the shadow of Ben Cruachan. A beautiful village in a beautiful part of Scotland. My maiden name was MAC NIVEN and aside from my father who was born in Cameron parish, Fife, all of my Mac Niven forbears came from the parish of Muckairn. My ggg grandfather married a CAMPBELL: Duncan MAC NIVEN, a woodcutter, b c1791 Muckairn, d between 1851-54, m 14 Dec 1811 at Aird, Muckairn Parish Ann CAMPBELL of Jerachan, b c 1794 Muckairn, d 15 July 1870 [aged 77] Aird, Muckairn Ann CAMPBELL's parents were John CAMPBELL, weaver of Jerachan, and Ann MC GREGOR. Unfortunately I don't know where Jerachan is/was but maybe someone on the list could assist me please. I have a 56 page book called Taynuilt; Our History that has no publication date but I think that it probably came out in the late 1960s. It gives an interesting background on the village & its history but unfortunately it doesn't have an index so I can't immediately spot whether or not there is any reference to Colquhouns in it. I have a photo of a gravestone that I took in the Muckairn church yard in 1978. Quite a few of the letters are covered with lichen but with the aid of a magnifying glass I can read the following inscription but don't quote me on it: "Sacred to the memory of Archibald CAMPBELL born at Balindore 1809?? died 10th? December 1899? also his wife Mary MC CALL? [MC CAILL?] ? died 12?th July 1899? after 82? years" Balindore is a few miles to the SW of Taynuilt. My gg grandfather John MAC NIVEN b c 1791 Muckairn, the son of Duncan MAC NIVEN as above, m 5 February 1848 at Muckairn Parish Church Mary MC COLL, b c 1828 'Balindore', Muckairn, d 14 Nov 1902, 'Coillendarroch', Glencruitten [just out of Oban]. I see that you have a New Zealand e-mail address. Our place, on the outskirts of Palmerston North, is called 'Balindore' and the dairy farm that my late parents had near Edgecumbe, in the Bay of Plenty, was called 'Balindore'. My brother did "reverse migration" in 1990 and lives just out of Cupar in Fife - his house is also called 'Balindore'. So that name from Muckairn parish has been carried on in another part of the world. Please contact me off list if I can be of any further help. Slainte. 2. brenda whiteman
    3. Hi List, Thank you to all that replied to my querry about Glen Garr. I think that it may have been the name of a property. I have a Walter Whiteman of Glen Garr, Argyleshire, this entry was made in a book written by his son in law in 1909. Walter had a son also named Walter who emigrated to New Zealand in the 1860's, he had a property in NZ that he also named Glen Garr. Walter senior was in business in Glasgow in 1820's, and his marriage and the birth of his children are all registered at Barony, Lanarkshire. But they are not on the census for Barony 1851. I have just got hold of this book and think that the mention of Glen Garr should be acurate as the author knew them personally at the time. I have heard mention of an ancestral home in Scotland and have been searching for some time now, this is the closest I've got to narrowing it down. 3. Many thanks to all those who replied to my question about the floating church. How wonderful is this list??! I'd hunted on the web several times, but looking for 'Iron Church' & not finding anything. Now there's all this fascinating information. How indeed did people 'do' family history before the web?? (That's a rhetorical question - I don't really want to be told about the hours/ weeks/ years of sending letters, waiting for answers.... it's too big a job to contemplate!). But many thanks for your help. jo ===== Joanna Broad __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! Greetings! http://greetings.yahoo.com
