    1. [ARGYLL] STEWART Census Lookup
    2. Alan Greenhouse
    3. Hi All Many thanks for the info supplied. As all of it related to the 1881 census, I presume that my understanding of there being an 1891 census index was incorrect. Sorry about duplicating the request, my omissions on my first one obviously didn't matter. Alan

    1. [ARGYLL] 1891 Census Lookup - STEWART
    2. Alan Greenhouse
    3. Hi Listers I'm reposting this as I omitted to include a subject description and also my e-mail address in my original note. I understand that there is a name index for the 1891 Scottish Census. If this is correct then could sks do a lookup for me please. I'm looking for the whereabouts of a Charles STEWART and his brother William STEWART, aged about 54 and 51 respectively. It is likely that they were born in either the parish of Logierait, or Kilmallie. I'm sorry not to have more information with which to identify them. Can someone also tell me if the 1881 Census has a name index also. Thanking you in anticipation. Alan alan_greenhouse@lineone.net

    3. Hi Bob : Coulaghailtro is a farm very close to Kilberry, I used to work there, the nearest graveyard would be at Kilberry , half a mile along the road, though there may well be others completly ovegrown in the woods round about, sadly I live in Aberdeen now ,otherwise I may have been able to have been of more use to you, though I may be going down that direction later on in the summer. 1. [ARGYLL] Mason vs wright
    2. Melonie Crnich
    3. Thanks for the help with the occupation "mason". One more question. I have been reading testiments (1800-1840) in Argyllshire and my name, William Stewart shows up in several places. Once he is called a "mason" and another place there is a William Stewart as a "wright". In your experience, would this be two separate individuals and/or trades. Am I looking at two different people? Thanks Melonie

    1. [ARGYLL] Stewarts in 1881 Census
    2. Alan, There is a name index to the 1881 Census on CD-ROM from Family Search. The cost is very low and includes a transcription of the census and the index. A quick search shows a number of possible matches which you would have to check against your other data for these brothers. Charles Stewart and William Stewart were popular names in Scotland.

    1. [ARGYLL] Re: Buying Certificates
    2. Brian Maye
    3. Have been busy lately and only lurking, but have to put in my two bob's worth. Getting these certificates can be useful but may be a disappointment, whether before 1855 or after. There are many errors, (I agree with the lister who suspected a wee dram on the way to the registry was correct) as well as the usual transcription problems with dialects being heard by someone other than a native speaker. I also suspect that there were speech impediments that we remedy these days. Examples I have found from OPRs are that on a page that gives scant name and parish one entry will suddenly note 'baptised in the manse', or an address other than the church, or a time of day for a ceremony, or an occupation when other entries do not state these. Another gives the time of day for a christening and the date of the parents' marriage as an extra footnote, and occupation at the time. Anne Maye

    1. [ARGYLL] OPR - to buy or not to buy?
    2. Anne Pryce
    3. There is much talk on this and other lists on whether or not to obtain original OPR entries and whether its worth the cost or not. I know it to be a gamble - it seems to me that the amount of information you might find depends very much on the whim of the person who made the entry. Whereas they largely might only contain the names of the pertinent people and or parish there are enough surprises for gaining access to the original entry to be worthwhile. I have two that while my instincts tell me they are likely mine I can`t ever be sure - no occupation for one. But I have been researching a freinds ancestors some of whom where in Wandell and Lamington around the 1850`s and found that over a two year period in this small village the minister was unknowingly making himself a star in the family historians world - names and occupations yes, but also what time of day the event took place, what local building whether the kirk or the schoolhouse, fathers names and other brilliant clues to local connections. In the case of one death I felt I could go there and find the spot - yards between this building and that building where given. But I reiterate the gamble - I recently found an entry in 1840 for a couple who are probably my great-great-great grandparents Charles Pryce and Grace Ward - right wifes names and husbands christian name, right occupation and right location, right date - only trouble is the mans surname was given as Bryson.. by some stretch of the imagination you could see how the Irish accent might cause this problem.. Try saying Charles Pryce `n Grace Ward in an Irish accent and you can see what I mean! Not easy to say people should obtain the entries or not where cost is involved - but I would - just in case.. Anne
