Dear Listers, I have recently joined this list in the hopes that somebody here can help with a couple of things. One of my husbands ancestors Peter SCUTTS was a taxidermist who was born in Aberdeenshire in 1863. He later became a laundry proprietor in Edinburgh from at least 1896, however prior to this he had a taxidermist shop in Oban. In the 1881 and 1891 census (when he was 27) he was living at home in Aberdeenshire with Naturalist shown as his trade. My questions therefore are: 1. We would like to determine when he had this shop in Oban (we believe possibly between 1891 and 1896) and hope that a trade directory or street directory would list him. Does such a thing exist? and 2. If so how would I access such information from here in Australia? We have a wonderful photograph of him standing in front of this shop in Oban and would very much like to add some additional information to it. Hoping somebody can help. cheers Maureen

Keils is the name of a farm on the island of Jura. It is set back from the main road about a third of the way up small Isles bay. It consisted of several crofts and in my youth was still growing cereals as well as having cattle. Sadly with the passing recently of Archie Black (a relative of mine and the last native Gaelic speaker on the island) who had the main house in the settlement, I think almost all of the farming has ceased and many of the cottages are now holiday homes. Keils is on the road to Kilearnadil Cemetery where most of the south half of the island gets buried. It is also mentioned in the census records as quite a large community Roddy MacKenzie Hassall wrote: > Hi there > I have these places for baptisms and am unsure where in Jura or > Colonsay they could be. The following site is brilliant for folk interested in family from there. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~steve/islay/info.htm Also everyone on the Islay list is extremely helpful : SCT-ISLAY-L@rootsweb.com Hope this helps. I can't for the life of me remember were I saw it on the web, but amongst my many searched into cairndow (cairndhu) in argyle, I came across a list which showed the place names in argyle and the parishes they represent. For example Cairndow is sometimes listed in the records as Kilmorich. Kilmeny is a parish name in argyle, but again, I can't remember which town or area it relates to and you will probably find the same applies to the other names on your list. There is a Dunans near the north border of North Knapdale Parish. It is about midway between Crinan and Lochgilphead, a little south of Crinan Canal. I have an Ordnance survey map of that area. It looks quite small and probably wouldn't be on a lot of maps. There may be other places with the same place name. Seems to happen with some frequency. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hassall" <rhassall@axion.net> To: <SCT-ARGYLL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 05, 2002 7:49 PM Subject: [ARGYLL] place names Keils, Torranhouse, Dunans, Kilmeny Parish > Hi there > I have these places for baptisms and am unsure where in Jura or Colonsay > they could be. Hi to all: We are back on line!!!! Keep in touch, Ross and Dorothy.
Hi Flora, If you leave a space between the Mc and the following part of the name I have found you get different results. Sheena.
My husband Hugh has just started adding North America to his IGI Batch Numbers facility. You can access this at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm So far he has done the batches in the 500,000-600,000 series. This is not necessarily complete at this point and if you know of any missing batch number sequences please let me know and he will be sure to add them. He is only looking at batches that begin with a letter ( eg: C for christenings and M for marriages) as these are part of the controlled extraction program and are therefore more reliable than patron submitted entries (which have numeric batch numbers) One thing we noticed last evening when I was looking at it is that the LDS site doesn't always notice "Mc's" or "Mac's ". In fact for Inverness County when I typed in the surname McDonald or MacDonald I got nothing but then I used "Donald" and got tons of MacDonalds and McDonalds. Happy hunting Flora
The only thing I can think of is when Church of Scotland rebelled against the patronage of the Lairds who claimed the right to appoint ministers to the churches and the members rebelled against this resulting in the disruptions of 1843 and the formation of The Free church of Scotland. But of course there are other religiouns to consider perhaps it's just a folk tale that may not be true, not all Oral tradition is acurate. Jim McPherson
Hi Listers, Has anyone come across the place "Oile Campbell" in North Knapdale. I have been doing some background research and I have been unable to find any reference to this location. My McAlpine ancestors were born/baptized there. Family stories relate that the McAlpines left Knapdale in 1818 due to religious persecution. Does anyone know of any resources that outline what this might do about? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Anne Mt. Albert, Ontario
In answer to Alan Greenhouse The 1891 Census (and the 1901 Census also) is available on computer in New Register House in Edinburgh. In both cases it is possible to bring up an image of the exact page required on screen. Consulting these however does have an attached cost - 17 pounds per day for a day ticket. If you want a free service you will need to persuade someone to look up the details for you. Frank Bigwood
