Hi, Is the person who was enquiring about lighthouse keepers still on the list. I think the surname being researched was Brown. Sheena.
Hi Listers, I am interested in discovering some information on my McInnes relative and her family. My gggrandmother's name is Isabella McInnes. Her death certificate says that she was born in Argylshire and her parents names are Donald McInnes and Isabella McPherson and that she was 72 years of age at her death in 1908. It would seem then that Isabella was born in 1836. Oral tradition says she was left an orphan and was brought up in the family of Duncan McInnes (who was supposed to be her uncle - but this doesn't seem all that likely - more likely a cousin). Isabella accompanied Duncan and others of Duncan's family to Australia on the ship named the Blonde from Scotland which arrived in Sydney 28 Dec 1849. According to the shipping records Duncan was then 22 yrs of age and Isabella was 15 (although she should have only been 13 if she was born in 1836) Duncan's parents were Peter & Ann McInnes and Duncan was born in 1826 in Fort William, Blaich, Ardgour, Argylshire. ( Or according to the IGI - in Kilmallie) I cannot find birth records for any of the other people in the IGI. I wonder if anyone out there has any ideas that might help me to track some of these people down. I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks for taking the time to read all this. Nigel, I've avoided answering your queries as I was sure Jo Currie would make a comment, but she appears to be off list at present. I hope you'll take the time to read her books properly. Currie "Mull Family names for Ancestor hunters " available through Brown-Whittaker in Tobermory (was 4.95 pounds) has over a page on Fletchers and the various areas where they lived. There are also several references to various John FLETCHERs in Jo Currie's book "Mull the Island and Its People " (soft cover still avilable from the Birlinn the publishers) p 55 John Fletcher foster father to Mally Maclaine (1740s to 1760s ....more details when you read the book) John FLETCHER fl.1770-1789 subtenant in Ledirkle (page283-4)removed from his land along with Niel Fletcher and a number of others (all pretended sub tenants of and possessors of thelands of Ledirkle" by Allan Maclaine Onp284 "In Ledirkle John Fletcher Snr and John Fletcher Jnr were to be ejected by 1800 withno reason given in the precept although presumably a reason had been given verbally before the sheriff's decreet." Jo goes on to say that there were John Fletchers in evidence on Mull after 1800 so perhaps they might not have left the Island altogether. p 292 Mary Fletcher fl 1806 in Ledirkle (mother of natural daughter by Sir Archibald Maclaine ) Sorry I don't have the time to type all these references out. Greetings. A fine family history of these McMasters was prepared many years ago: H. Shiell McMaster 1982, 'Records and Recollections of the McMaster Family of Rangers Valley, Glen Innes and Croppa, Warialda', Land of the Beardies History House Bulletin, vol. 10, no. 3, pp. 3-32. It was written in 1943 and revised by the author in 1964. The family originally came from Tomacharich, a farm in Inverness-shire, Scotland, near Fort William. They migrated in 1837 on the 'Brilliant', sailing from Tobermory, Isle of Mull, to Sydney, NSW, Australia. I am keen to contact any other descendents of these McMasters, and particularly to locate the letters that H. Shiell McMaster quotes in his family history. Hello, I am a new subscriber to the list and am endeavoring to find my McColl family. Hugh and Isabella McColl were born ca 1760-1780 and had the following children in Scotland: Daniel R., Hugh Jr, Nancy They emigrated to America after the birth of Nancy in 1800. After arriving in America other children were born. Is anyone on the list familiar with this family? If so I would appreciate any assistance in finding information of their lives before emigrating. Thank you, Dorothy

Hi List Members: Is anyone researching one or more of the following couples? James LINN/LYNN and Mary BLACK married Aug. 28, 1820 at Gigha. Their daughter Betty, was born 29 Sep. 1821 at Killean & Kilchenzie. John BLACK and Janet McFIGGAN married 30 Dec. 1830 at Killean & Kilchenzie. Duncan McMILLAN and Flora BLACK married 2 Oct. 1832 at Killean & Kilchenzie. (I think the IGI listing of the year as 1822 is incorrect but I haven't checked the actual Parish Records.) Their son Hugh was born 18 May, 1834 at Killean & Kilchenzie. I think Mary, John and Flora may be siblings of my ancestor Alexander BLACK. His parents, John BLACK and Elizabeth McALISTER, were married 1 Feb. 1798 in Campbeltown. They had many children, and I have photocopies of the Killean & Kilchenzie christening records for most of them. My ancestor, Alexander BLACK married Kate CAMPBELL 26 Sep. 1832 in Killean & Kilchenzie. Their son John's Jan. 25, 1834 birth is listed in the Parish of Gigha records. The family left for Canada soon after as their next child was born in Canada C1836. (I don't know if any of Alexander's siblings came to Canada.) Sure would be nice to hear from someone who thinks we may have common ancestors. Doris in Barrie, Ont. Canada dward@barint.on.ca

Excerpt from "Scottish Snippets." >National Trust Brew a Campbell Soup >You might have thought that 300 years after the Massacre of 38 members of the MacDonald clan in Glencoe by a group of government soldiers led by a Campbell, that the enmity between the two clans might have subsided a bit by now. That this was not the case was shown clearly this week when the National Trust for Scotland appointed a Campbell to head the new visitor centre at Glencoe. With at least one local hotel displaying a sign saying "No hawkers. No Campbells" there were plenty of locals prepared to give quotes to the national press. "Perhaps Mr Campbell could consider getting his name changed by deed poll before he arrives" said one while another commented "Only a quango like the National Trust could come up with something like this". Somewhat defensively, the Trust said that the appointment had been made "on merit" and his name was never considered. After such a controversial start, you might have thought that Mr Campbell would at least initially keep a low profile. >
