Could you be more specific on how to find the site? I _think_ I know what happened. It has come to my attention that the links in my email were broken into 2 lines. Unfortunately, most email programs don't like this, and clicking on the (usually underlined) links generates a "404 not found" or similar message. Since this is a common occurance with long URLs, everyone should learn the trick for dealing with it. If you see that an URL is 2 or more lines, you must copy it from the email text and paste it into the "Address" box in your web browser. Sometimes this must be done line by line, and care must be taken that it has no spaces or ">" characters (added when the email is quoted). It's a pain, I know - computers are supposed to make things easier. Sometimes I wonder if programmers actually use the software they write. Another trick which the SENDER can use to shorten links is to go to http://makeashorterlink.com/ . Copy and paste the URL into the box. Copy the URL that they generate into your email, and bingo, you have an easy-to-click-on link. I should have done this myself, but forgot to in my rush to be helpful. Here are another set of links to the Argyll Census, made shorter as I've just described: A-C http://makeashorterlink.com/?D221154A D-L http://makeashorterlink.com/?Q551254A M-Z http://makeashorterlink.com/?F361124A Mc http://makeashorterlink.com/?W271204A If you STILL don't have any luck, drop me a PRIVATE email telling me EXACTLY what you're doing, and I'll try to sort it out. Charles It's difficult to know which topic you are referring to, when you give only a Digest number - some of us receive our messages individually and not in Digest form. If, however, you are referring to Jeffrey's advice on how to recover the 1779 Argyll census data, it worked perfectly for me - and, I gather, for others too. It might be worth your re-reading the advice and trying again, as I don't see how the instructions could be more explicit. Seeking information on a Daniel McCallum born about 1750 to 1760 possibly in Isle of Islay but likely in Argyll. Also, with given names, there are sometimes variant "nicknames" i.e.(in US research) Betsy is Elizabeth; Peggy is Margaret; Agnes may be Jane or Ann; Mary is Polly. Is or are there traditional "nicknames" for Daniel? Also, are the potential variations for "Ann" the same as in the US research? Hi Listers . Many thanks to all who replied re the 1779 Argyll Census and it's disapearance from the Web and in particular to Jeffrey McEachin who solved the problem of recovering dropped Web entries. . Best wishes Les Onich Inverness-shire
Hi Listers . I'm currently having problems with my "pending" tray, Would whoever asked me to check a burial (I think it was for STEWART) in Muckairn churchyard please contact me again and I will do the look-up shortly. . Best Wishes . Les Onich Inverness-shire
This does not work. I only got his site, but there was no "More" options. There was only one results and when you clicked on it, I got a "oops" page could not be found. Could you be more specific on how to find the site? Charles
Thank you to everyone for information on parishes for Islay. Carla
Hi List, I have recently discovered that I have McKinnon ancestors from the Island of Kerrera. I have just read the microfilm of the church records from Kilmore & Kilbride and found my 3x great-grandparents with their family - Angus McKinnon and Lucy or Louisa McDougall, and their 9 children. Some baptism records say Kerrera, some say something that looks like Slatrach. I can't find a map anywhere that gives the names of towns or villiages on Kerrera. Does that name sound familiar to anyone? Thanks, Diane Williams, N.B. Canada, researching McIntosh, Lyall, Love, Sievewright, McKinnon, McDougall in Scotland
Carla Islay had basically three old parishes Bowmore or Kilarrow, Kildalton and Kilchoman. In the 19th century the parishes were divied up to some extent and Kilmeny (part of Bowmore), Oa (part of Kildalton) and Portnahaven (part of Kilchoman) were created, although Kilmeny in eatlier times is sometimes used for the parish of Bowmore. However, since your enquiry is about someone who was born about 1870, may I suggest that you look first at the statutory registers as the birth should be recorded there and knowledge of parish names may not help very much. Listers . I had the Argyll Estate Census saved as one of my favourites, however, I've tried to access it and have been told, by Geocities. that the URL doesn't exist. Has anyone any idea as to where I can find it. I seem to remember it was on Dean Currie's website which I can't find either. . Even using good old Google to serch I can't find them. . Many thanks Les Onich Inverness-shire
Hi, Can anyone tell me which parish Islay would come under around 1870. I'm looking for the birth of an Alexander McNab who was shown as born there in the census. Thank you. Carla
Any info on Archibald BROWN, on Isle of Jura possibly 1710-1770, married Agnes _______. About 1770-1770, they supposedly sailed to America, settled in Chatham Co, NC with other Scots, They had a son, Andrew, Sr, supposedly born on Jura. Thanks for any help, Bill Brown in Dallas, Texas

The trick is to search for "1779 Argyll Estate", click on "More results from www.geocities.com", then click on "repeat the search with omitted results included", then click on the cached versions: A-C - http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:QpKukr4G3CcC:www.geocities.com/Heartlan d/Park/8997/agyllcensus.htm+&hl=en D-L - http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:fC5BR_2iYWkC:www.geocities.com/Heartlan d/Park/8997/namesDtoL.htm+&hl=en M-Z - http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:oa_fSMwFiWkC:www.geocities.com/Heartlan d/Park/8997/namesMtoZ.htm+dean_currie%40dccnet.com+argyll+&hl=en Mc - http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:2jjk0qC06LwC:www.geocities.com/Heartlan d/Park/8997/namesMc.htm+dean_currie%40dccnet.com+argyll+&hl=en Another good resource for finding defunct webpages is Alexa's "Wayback Machine" at http://www.archive.org/ . For that, you need to know the URL. If you can find another page which links to the page you want, you can right click on the link, select "Copy Shortcut", then paste it into the Wayback Machine's URL box. With a little smarts and determination, almost any dead page can be resurrected. Between Google and Alexa there are TERABYTES of archived webpages. JDM
Does anyone have any info on the FLETCHER family in Lochgilphead. cheers Pen
