Hi Listers . Does anyone know what Indexes of MIs exist, and where they're located, for the various (north) Argyll, mainland, Parishes. . Les Horn Onich Inverness-shire
I'm sure this has been asked, but a refresher would help me today. If a woman had previously been married - in the 1750 era - if her husband died and she remarried, which name might she remarry under? her maiden name? her married name? I can only find a whisper of one child (for what I beleive to be an original marriage) but within three years I find the same woman's name in the OPR marriages to someone else. However, I have no proof it is the same woman, and in this record time frame, information is so limited. Any advise would be appreciated, Joy, USA

I'm hoping some kind soul can help me with this one. I have a sick friend who is trying to track down her grandfather - James Lamb, born in Dunoon in the 1850s. Can anyone give me any urls, advice (... or good old fashioned help!!!) as to where I could get some information for her? She is on a very limited budget and can't afford to travel the distance involved. Thanks L. Purnell

A sister of my g-g-grandfather, Marjory McDonald married Dugald McPherson and had one son that I know of, John, who appears in the 1851 census with the family of my g-g-grandfather Alexander McDonald and his wife Ann (Stewart) and their family. John was 12 years of age at this stage. The family was at Tayfurst, the birth place of John McPherson, at the time of the 1851 census. Does anyone know anything of these people? - Janet Wilson, Victoria, Australia.
Hello I will not be able to stay on this List as I am on too many already. While on the Scots Origin site, I have this page for my relative and wanted to share the other names. I am looking for any other info on the McKenzie family here. I know there was a son, John Stewart McKenzie born in January 1859 but did not locate him. The best bet would be to drive or take a bus from Oban to Lochgilphead 28 miles, where the Argyll county Archives are located, your friend should be able to get the address and phone number from Oban district library. It is neccessary to phone & book a place at the County Archives in advance. Jim McPherson
I have a friend who is coming to the UK from the USA in May to research his McDowell relatives. Can anyone give a clue as to the best places in the Oban area for research -are there local history centres or records centres which he can use? Many thanks, Jim Mackay james.mackay4@ntlworld.com (Personally interested in Geddie and McPhail families who travelled to the USA - North Carolina) in about 1772, possibly from the Argyllshire area, but I have no evidence of that)

Hi Listers , I see some of you have just been introduced to the vageries of Scottish, in particular West of Scotland, Parishes. . In the early 19th Century the Census' were based upon the (Presbyterian) church Parishes which themselves were within Presbyteries. . In the case of Arisaig, in Ardnamurchan Parish, along with the Mull Parishes and those of Kilmore & Kilbride, Tiree & Coll, Kilmalie, Morvern and (north) Ballachulish & Corran of Ardgour these were in the Argyll Presbytary of Mull; . albeit Arisaig and the Small Isles (Muck, Eigg, Rum, Canna & Sanday), Moidart, Kilmalie (N of Loch Eil + Fort William) and (north) Ballachulish were actually in the (civil) county of Inverness- shire. . This was OK until 1855 when the Census' and recording of BMD (Births, Marriages & Deaths) was formalised and returns, replacing the PRs (Parish Records/Registers) were made to the SRO (Scottish Records Office) in Edinburgh. At that time some of the Parishes were shuffled around and renumbered. This again happened in 1970 when the civil and church parishes were brought into line. . Unfortunately, in 1974, the then government. in its wisdom, sought to further complicate matters by introducing the regions, in this case Strathclyde and Highland, yet again splitting the Argyll Parishes - but that's another story. . The moral of this tale as far as Genealogists/Family History Researchers are concerned is "Don't confuse Civil and Church Counties" . If any one is desperate to know the RD (Registration District) numbers for a particular Argyll Parish at a particular date I'm only too willing to look it up for them (from the list I inherited). Just E-mail me at Leshorn@bushinternet.com . As a point of interest : the LDS IGI is based on those PRs in the SRO. Some of the Parish Records mysteriously went missing between Parish and SRO and, hence, there are holes, as well as transcription errors, in the IGI. . Ken, Glynis & others Re the messages re McPHERSON at Appin, I don't know where Appin is or if it's where mine were, but I'll put my ones out there anyway. I haven't chased this line at all yet. I have a Donald McPHERSON who married Flora CAMERON, & had a daughter Anne c. Feb 1806 in Ockle, Argyllshire. Anne McPHERSON married Duncan STEWART (b. c1810 in Ardnamurchan). The marriage was I think on 19Aug1838 in Cardross, Dunbarton. Anne & Duncan STEWART arrived in Wellington, New Zealand 1858 with 2 daughters & 2 sons (one named Alexander b c May1843, Buarblaig, Arndamurchan). I have descendents of Alexander, but little else. I have another question about parishes in Scotland. Could someone please explain what the parish numbers are, what they mean, and what are they used for? I am trying to understand Scottish geanealogy, but I've only dealt with US and Canada so far and it's nothing like Scotland. Tracy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tracy My information suggests that there was an Arisaig in both counties, or - more likely - one Arisaig that crossed the county boundary in 1900. A list of parish registration numbers that I picked up some years ago shows - Arisaig in Argyll - Parish no 505/2 from 1855 to1899 Arisaig in Invernessshire - Parish no 091B from 1900 to1955 West Arisaig in Argyll - Parish no 505/4 from 1855 to 1930 West Arisaig in Argyll - Parish no 505/3 from 1931 to 1955 An obituary in 1900 would have been just after the change. Diane Williams I know of six 'townships' in historical times on Kerrera: Ardentrive, Ardmore, Gylen, Barnabuck, Slaterich and Balliemore. There may have been others which have disappeared completely. All but one, Ardentrive, belonged to the McDougalls of Dunollie in 1751. Ardentrive belonged to the Campbells of Breadalbane. Frank Bigwood
