Donald I have several of your surnames in my tree so was wondering if you could email me privately with a few first names to go with the surnames of Campbell, Leitch, MacArthur and possibly MacIntrye to see if any of them match up with mine. Also what time periods are we talking about here. Judi (Free2beJudi@cs.com) (Judith A. M. E. Can any one help me with any details regarding James Clark or Catherine Campbell who married in Lochgoilhead in March 1863. Thanks Colin Dewar
Anyone know of a Catholic school run by nuns in Oban in the 1930s? Thanks Ian H. Grant ihgrant@sympatico.ca
In Argyll I am researching: MacColl/McColl/McCall The following family immigrated to Wilmington,NC abt 1790. Daniel McColl (with unknown parents) Nancy or Ann McColl maybe: Hugh Samuel m. Mary Ann Portis Isabella Jane m. Hugh McLaurin had son Duncan Christian or Catherine I only have positive connection of Nancy to Daniel, but many clues connecting the others to Nancy and Daniel. Daniel had a son who married Elmira Sowell. However, positive proof connecting the above mentioned to each other has been elusive. Could be children of Lachlin and Catherine McLaurin McColl or Samuel McColl and wife Nancy McLaughlin, all born in Argyll or could be children of a totally different set of McColls. All lived in SC and then immigrated to Monroe County, Alabama. Would so appreciate any information and would particularly love to find the birth of Nancy or Ann McCall abt 1789 in Argyll. Thank you. Dorothy
It's been some long time since I've posted my Argyll interests, and that was several email addresses ago. I am researching: Cameron, Campbell (Lochawe); Menzies; MacNiven; MacKinnon; Leitch; MacIntyre; MacCallum; MacArthur (maybe!), all in northern Argyllshire. Sheila
Hello My name is Suzanne Felder and I am from Perth Western Australia. I am doing some reasearch on our family and was wondering if you could give me any information on my great great grandparents JOHN McKENZIE and his wife SARAH McKENZIE (Sarah was also a McKenzie before she married John. I believe they were married in 1844 at Ardmurcham. I have no details of that and I'm looking for anything to do with both their families. I have the name of a town called Astamarcon where James Wallace McKenzie, their second born was born. They had 3 children John b1846, James Wallace b1852 and Jessie b1855. I would also love to have some information on Sarah's background. If you could help that would be wonderful. If not would you have any idea where I could turn to? Oh yes we are having a BIG family reunion in Queensland on June 29 and a book is being prepared. Thank you Suzanne.

A KIND LISTER FORWARDED THIS TO ME-IS THERE ANYONE WHO CAN LINK TO JAMES IN ROTHSAY. OR IS THERE ANYONE WHO COULD LINK THE DRUMMOND TO THE BURKE FAMILY?? Jim 'I was wondering if you had an Drummond family in Rothesay that you know of, I have just been told by my mum that there were Drummond and Burke tinkers in Rothesay, My mum has lived there since the 1950s so it must be after that date that she knew of them. I have been looking at some marriage certificates you I have and found a James Drummond who was a witness to the marriage of Allan McGilp and Susanna McDonald in Rothesay ( Allan was the grandson of William Livingstone who I posted on the list as living in a tent at Kilmun). I know there is no evidence to say this James Drummond was a tinker, but I just thought this information may be of interest to you.'
Hi Listers I am looking for any information on the following Dunoon & Kilmun family: Duncan FERGUSON, "Ferryman" and wife Mary CAMERON children: Margaret Elizabeth both christened, 6 May 1827, Dunoon & Kilmun (source:IGI both parish records as well as 'patron sheets') The year and place agrees with later marriage and census data for Elizabeth. I obtained a copy of the GRO record for a Duncan Ferguson's 1870 Kilmun death, however it appears it may be the incorrect one as his wife is recorded as being Mary WHYTE. The possibility exists, though, that the Whyte marriage may have been a second marriage and this may be reinforced by the fact that I can find no other children attributed to the FERGUSON/CAMERON marriage but begining in the mid-1830s several children are born to the FERGUSON/WHYTE marriage. The 1881 census reveals several Mary's but I can't make a connection with them - it also tells me that there are many Fergusons in the area and several are associated with the ferry service. I don't have access to the 1861 or earlier census. The daughter of the above mentioned Elizabeth (Margaret Ferguson Blair Raeside), who was born in Kilmun but at the time a resident of Partick, died in 1907 while visiting Kilmun (Laggan Buie) so it seems likely there was still a fairly strong connection with the Ferguson family . I would truly appreciate any information about any generation of this family....and also cemetery location information in the area (which I hope to be visiting quite soon). Also can someone tell me if cemetery transcriptions can be found at the Mitchell Library and/or the Greenock library. Thanks kindly Helen

Greetings, It has been brought to my attention that the UK County Surnames site ( http://www.county-surnames.co.uk/index.mv ) I forwarded to the list last week is a commercial site instead of the free site I was thinking about. I will check out all future forwardings before sending them on to you. There are plenty of free sites dealing with Argyll genealogy. Some of them in my own bookmarks files are: Ian Forshaw's Kintyre Magazine http://members.aol.com/KintyreMag/ Sandy McClellan's Skipness Parish records (with links) http://home.attbi.com/~priestner/Skipness/Skipness.htm Barbara's Argyllshire Surname list (with links) http://members.aol.com/sloinne/Argyll/Surnames.htm Darren McCathern's Argyllshire Scotland GenWeb page http://www.scotlandroyalty.org/argyll/argyllshire.html Isle of Mull genealogy pages http://www.mullgenealogy.co.uk/ GENUKI: Argyll http://www.roe.ac.uk/genuki/arl/ Rootsweb's Argyll Message Board (two line URL) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.britisles.scot land.arl.general 1841 Colonsay census transcription http://www.colonsay.org.uk/genedata.html Anne White's Isle of Muck census data 1841-1891 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~muck/GENEAL.HTM Bill McPhail's Kilmartin, Argyll website http://www.clanphail.org/kilmartin/ The Dunoon Observer & Argyllshire Standard newspaper http://www.dunoon-observer.co.uk/ John McSporran's Kintyre roots including history and pictures of Kilchenzie Church, etc. http://website.lineone.net/~john.mcsporran/index.html Bobbie Hall's Argyll connections http://pages.prodigy.com/bobbie-hall/ Steve Gilchrist's Isle of Islay website http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~steve/islay/data.htm My own pages including McMillan Killean parish extracts: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/5699/mcmill1.html I hope these are of interest or assistsance to you. Hello list, Am reposting a message I sent to the list about a year ago. Have made no headway with this query. When Sarah McFadden/McFadyen married Donald McFadyen in 1825, the Kilfinichen & Kilvicheon, Mull Parish records show she came from Kenlock. Have not found any record of her parents or siblings. Naming patterns suggest Parents could be John and Catherine. Has anyone any information on this family? Thanking you in anticipation, OLWYN N.Z.
This excerpt is from "Scottish Snippets." Eileen >Freedom of Information Act Passed The Scottish Parliament this week finally passed the legislation which allows individuals freedom of access to information held by government, local councils, schools, police and health service. While campaigners say that it still does not go far enough, the Freedom of Information Act goes further than anything seen in the UK for over 100 years. The principle of the legislation is that anything should be publicly available - unless there is an overwhelming reason why it should be kept secret. There will be an independent "watch dog" appointed by Parliament who will be able to order public bodies to release documents on request. The Justice Minister, Jim Wallace, claimed that the legislation demonstrated how "devolution is delivering" and had been tailored to meet the needs of Scotland. Even the critics had to grudgingly admit that it was a better set of rules than the one being progressed by the Parliament in London which will apply to England and Wales.
Hi I am new to the list and was wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a death certificate for my gg grandfather Robert Livingstone, who died in 1889 at Larch hill in Dunoon. Does anyone know where Larch hill is? The informant of his death was a William Christie Inspector of the poor who was not present at the death. Thanks, Jane
Thought this might be of interest to some of you. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~relys4u/ This is a great site if you are interested in finding ancestors in these areas. Both my husband and I have had some success. Catriona Sillars.
Hi All Can anybody tell me if Dalrioch Cottage in Campbeltown is still standing, and is/was it part of an estate? Thanks Frances
Listers - This is a request for research guidance. Peter McCallum received a land grand in Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. He was from Stirlingshire; however he very likely was born in Argyll. About 1830, he received a land grant in Ontario Canada. The land grant was an "S.E." grant which was a grant given only to SONS of Military Emigrants in 1815. We are tracing down the land grant now in Canada. However, I am interested in how to find out the military records of the individual. Have been informed about the PROCAT index for War Office records and am also aware of Military Records Soldiers Documents 1760-1872 (a series of microfilms on Scot military service personnel-FHL868543 etc.). I am curious about any other (or all) military or pension record resources for soldiers serving from Argyll or Stirlingshire. Thanks so much. Your sharing and knowledge are so very much appreciated by those of us just entering into this research. One last question is there a good book for family research prior to 1830 in Scotland? The one I purchased is primarily focused on research after the 1850's and since my people left Canada in the 1830's, it is of little value. Greetings from Your Friendly List Administrator, While trying to make the Rootsweb computer smarter <sigh>, it now interprets blank subject lines as attempts to subscribe. There is an easy fix - just make sure you have a lovely, informative subject line and all your fellow list members will be: a) able to read your posting because Rootsweb bounces those with blank subject lines back to me - or worse, they go to the list and never get that wonderful list tag letting everyone know it's from a list and is not a mail virus. b) able to tell without opening each one (in digest mode) which folks they can best assist. c) introduced to you and your genealogy quest properly and most successfully. A neat, tidy and helpful subject line would contain the surname of the folks you're looking for, a date or approximation thereof and maybe even a location. As always, you can contact me directly with any questions or problems you might be having receiving or posting to the list. Thanks for listening and have a lovely day, Cathy DiPietro vdpcom@warwick.net list admin: Lunen-Links, NJSussex-L, SCT-Argyll-L, Kinney-L at Rootsweb
