    1. [ARGYLL] Virus Warning
    2. Melonie Crnich
    3. Sorry Guys... But I just received a message from one of my contacts that my address book may have been infected by a virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) not detected by Norton or McAfee antivirus systems. The virus stays quiet for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by the Messenger and by the address book, whether or not you sent e-mails to your contacts. I don't know when I got it but we checked, found and deled it. YOU should do the following: 1. Go to start, Find or search option 2. In the Files/folder option, write the name jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure you search in you C:drive if you have more that one hard drive go to MY Computer 4. Click "Find now" 5. The virus has a little bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT 6. Right click and delete it (it will then go to the Recycle Bin) 7. Go to the Recycle Bin and delete it there as well, or empty the bin. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK. SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR ADDRESS BOOKS.

    3. Thank you to Ian and Frank for giving me the directions to Druimavuic. I have found it on a map. Can anyone tell me if there was ever a town there where my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather would have been born? It seems such a wee place, would people have lived there in 1829? My grateful thanks for your assistance. This is a very helpful list and I have noted many a useful website through it. Regards Penny from a cold and wintry New Zealand

    3. Dear Sheena, I'm also interested in Wills at Argyle or anywhere in Scotland, I haven't any idea where to look. Is there a family History Society at Fort William near Corpach. What is the new site you mention. Please forgive my ignorance but I am new to family tree discovery. Maria McKenzie

    3. Hi Maria, The new will site can be found at www.scottishdocuments.com I have not heard from Frank Bigwood so I am obviously missing his point. I enjoy going to the site you can pick up so much just from the limited info on each will. I also find the following useful www.scan.org.uk www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/ www.rampantscotland.com/ has good info and a genealogy section. www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/history/scottishroots/webguide/index.shtml There is also a free Scottish bdm site at www.sctbdm.com/ I hope you find some of this useful if you have not already visited these sites. Good luck. Sheena.

    3. I have found on an Ordnance map several villages in Kilninver & Kilmelford Parish where ancestors lived. I have found Duachy, Barochreal, Lagganmore, Shellachan, and Scammadale all in general vicinity of Kilninver--sometimes the spelling is slightly different in the Old Parochial Records--but I have been unable to find anything that I can connect with Ardnahuay, which seems to be where some of my ancestors lived. Does anyone have any suggestions? D. Lou Ritter, Kalamazoo, MI MUNRO, MCPHERSON, MCCOWAN, MCINTYRE, CAMPBELL

Druimavuic is a hamlet at the head of Loch Creran and would, in the early 19th century, have probably been part of Glencreran Estate. As this is within my area of interest, ie North Argyll, if she gives me what details she has I will have a look for her. Les Onich Inverness-shire

    2. Penny in New Zealand Druimavuic is at the head of Loch Creran. If you find the Island of Lismore in Loch Linnhe on a map, you will see that Loch Creran is opposite it on the east side of Loch Linnhe. Druimavuic used to be on the main road from Oban to Ballachulish, which you should be able to find on a map, but the road now crosses the loch by a new bridge about 4 km to the west. Frank Bigwood

    2. Could I point out that the index of testaments/wills on the Scottish Documents site is still far from complete. For example, Argyll is not yet represented. I understand from the SCAN project, which is doing the work, that it is intended also that the fairly primitive search facility will be considerably improved when all the indexes come on line in the near future and will certainly have proper references to the registers themselves which they do not have at the moment. However one of the plus points at the moment is that the site does provide an index to the testaments in Edinburgh Commissary Court which was the head Commissary Court in Scotland and which records testaments from actross the whole country as well as recording testaments of Scots people who died outside Scotland. What this index will eventually do is give access to the new digitised images of the testaments which are an enormous improvement on the present microfilm. it will also, hopefully, provide in the future an accurate index to the testaments of the Commissary Court of Argyll for the 17th century, which does not exist at the moment. I would also remind people that the registers of testaments are only a part of the records of the Commissary Courts (the courts which in Scotland dealt with testaments and executries until 1823) in the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh. Frank Bigwood

    3. I have just received a copy of a Baptism record in the Parish of Ardchattan, Argyll. The year is 1829 and states "Duncan Cameron and Jane Cameron at Drimveick had a child".... etc The writing is not too bad but could be Drimvuck or Drimveek. Has anyone heard of this place, could it have been a farm? Many thanks Penny New Zealand

    3. Hi there I am looking for information on this family. ANN BELL m. MALCOLM MCANNELL. I believe she died and MALCOLM MCCANNELL remarried ANN MCMILLAN and they had several children in Canada. NEIL MCCANNELL b. 1836 was the only child I have with ANN BELL and MALCOLM MCCANNELL as parents. ANN BELL'S parents were DONALD BELL and CATHIRN MCMILLAN. I am wondering if anyone knows if Ann Bell died in Scotland. Or, another idea someone gave me was perhaps Ann Bell and Ann McMillan are the same person but that she was illegitimate and used the name Bell (her father's name) in Scotland and McMillan (her mom's name) in Canada. Or, am I way out in left field? Thanks Judy in Canada

    1. [ARGYLL] 1841 Scotland Free Census Project
    2. Jennifer Gribble
    3. I am excited to announce the launch of the Scotland Free Census project. This is part of the larger UK Free Census project (aka FreeCEN) that aims to transcribe ALL the UK 19th century census returns to create an online 'free-to-view' database. We have a project covering the 1841 returns for Ayrshire and would like to recruit organizers to cover the rest of the 1841 Scottish returns. Organizers recruit and supervise a team of volunteers to transcribe a county or part of a county. The area you cover is up to you. To be an organizer, you just need some time, a computer and access to a microfilm or microfiche reader. This is a global on-line project for ordinary family historians who are interested in contributing to their hobby. If, like us, you believe that this information should be freely available and available for free, just drop me a line at jgribble@speakeasy.org More information on the project can be found at: http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html Thank you, Jennifer Gribble P.S. I am unable to monitor this list very frequently so please email me directly with any questions.
