    3. Hello Janet, I read your message regarding your ancestors dying due to cholera in Jan.1854. Like you, I have found cholera was the reason several people died around this time. We found a husband and wife who died of cholera , within a day of each other, in Sep. 1854 in Montrose, Angus. This information came from the Montrose Parish Register. Regards, Keith (New Zealand)

    2. Moira Ledger
    3. Dear Listers, Am I on the right list for folk in and around Dunoon? My road map doesnt even have Argyll anymore. Did it get the chop? If so it leaves me relying on distant memories. I am looking for the families above, Steven and Maria Chalmers nee McFarlane known to be in Dunoon 1881, along with Maria's parents Alexander and Ann nee Simpson along with son David and daughter Charlotte Maxwell Mcfarlane. Steven descends from James Chalmers and Janet Lauder. Janet descends from John Lauder, we know two of his brothers, Robert and William Murray Lauder but cant yet name his parents. The three brothers were born in St Ninians, so I expect I also need to contact a Stirlingshire list. Steven was a photographer. Does any one know if there if a local history soc in Dunoon which may have knowledge of a local photographer If any one recognises these families I'd be interested in trading information. I have dates etc for anyone wanting more detail. My knowledges stretches from 1782 John Lauder up to 1900 when Steven and his family left Dunoon as far as is known, (mostly for Rothesay). moira

    1. [ARGYLL] MacCathmhaoil Family
    2. Good evening, SKS recently identified from George Black's Scottish Surnames an additional ancient family of McCalls in Bute, M'Kails and M'Kaills. This is cross referenced to ancient McCalls of Dumfries-shire, which identifies Robert M'Kawele in 1370. M'Kerlie in "Lands and Owners of Galloway" on page 169 mentions Malcolm M'Kaill of Cantyre (or Bute) in 1306 fighting at Loch Ryan and the MacDougalls capturing and beheading him. Earlier writings mention Edgar M'Kaill or M'Kawele named Earl in Girvan by King David. Coming from 190 AD in Armagh after the assassination of the King of Lenister? and famine, MacCathmhaoil are raiding into Galloway and Wales. Around 450 AD there is a split of MacCathal of Hy and the Cholla Brothers who move to Argyll and later become MacColl and the MacCathal are listed as Kings in Connacht up to time of Edgar in Girvan. I'm trying to find the connection from Connacht to Ayrshire with King David. In a book on Castles in Scotland, I find several Land Grants to Irish Lords by King David, but haven't found this connection. Does SKS have any info? 1. [ARGYLL] Ardkinglas Estate/ JESSIE ARMSTRONG b approx 1826
    2. Mungungo
    3. My great grandmother (Jessie ARMSTRONG) was born on the Ardkinglas Estate in approx 1826. She was christened on 17 June 1827, Canobie,Dumfries. The birth information came from her death certificate and the Christening from the LSD Site. Oral Family History says that she was related to the Campbell's and back to the Duke of Argyll, however I have not been able to establish this, but I did find a site on the Internet that said the ARDKINGLAS Estate was owned by the Campbell's and wonder if this is where the 'Myth???" arose. A cousin here in Australia has a linen tablecloth which was apparently a wedding present from the Campbell's when Jessie married George ANNAND in Largs, County Ayr on 20 August 1852 (I have the original certificate) It is also said that Lady Janet Campbell went to Greenock, Glasgow to farewell the couple when they sailed for Australia on 11 September 1852 aboard the 'Aberfoyle'. Other confirmed family members are ALEXANDER ARMSTRONG b 12 Jan 1821 Stirling and JANE ARMSTRONG (who married Robert Porteous) I am seeking any information re 1. Ardkinglas Estate 2. Are all these places in close proximity.... 3. Any information about Jessie, her parents and siblings Thank you Helene Helene J Hayes Pakenham, Victoria, Australia helenh@nex.net.au

    3. Ardkinglas house didn't exist until 1907 when it was built by a man called Robert Lorimer but I'm not sure if the actual estate existed before that date. Ardkinglas is on the east shore of Loch Fyne next to the village or Cairndow (Kilmorich and Lochgoilhead parish) but would come under the lands of the Duke or Argyll and in distance is very close to Inverary where the family seat is.(+/- 5 miles). These days Ardkinglas house is open for corporate events and as a location for film and tv (the dramatisation of Iain Banks 'The Crow Road' was set around it and the gardens have been turned into woodland walks. There is a website, www.ardkinglas.com with a contact email address. Katrina Halsey Mungungo wrote: > My great grandmother (Jessie ARMSTRONG) was born on the Ardkinglas Estate > in approx 1826.
