Hello List, As a new member to the list I was looking in the archives and found references to a census of 1820 (I think) - of the Duke of Argyll's tenants - please can anyone tell me where it covered and how to find it? I am particularly interested in Gigha and the Mull of Kintyre. Many thanks, Mary in Australia Argyllshire:McNEIL, McGOUGAN Ayrshire: MORRISON, CAMPBELL, LOGAN, SLOAN, TEMPLETON, MacKAY (McKAY,McKEE, McKIE), GOLDIE, DUNBAR, BROWN.
Excerpt from "Scottish Snippets": MacCallum Curse Lifted After 450 Years According to legend, handed down through the generations, some time in the 1550s the members of the MacCallum clan were gathered in the church in Kilbride in Argyll for the Sunday service. But there were so many of them that when members of the rival MacDougall clan arrived, there was no room for them and they had to stand outside. This prompted Lady MacDougall (who had the gift of the "evil eye") to place a curse on the MacCallums to the effect that the sons and heirs would die off if they did not move from their home at Cologin. Sure enough, over the next few years, nine out of the 12 MaCallum sons died and the remainder fled to avoid the same fate. Now, in a ceremony at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina, where a well-attended Highland Games take place each year, a MacDougall will try to lift the curse. The plan is to have a group of MacCallums blocking the entrance and then stand aside and invite them in. Not that there is a church handy - the ceremony will be held at a beer tent, but it's the thought that counts. Unfortunately, the Lyon clerk at the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh, responsible for all heraldry in Scotland, says that for the ceremony to be official, the clan chiefs would need to be present. But there is no head of the MacCallums - the small clan merged with the Malcom clan many years ago.
Margaret McNAIR was born about 1809. at Achantain in Kilmodan Parish. Her parents were Alexander MCNAIR and Elizabeth THOMPSON. Margaret married Daniel BROWN at Inverchaolin on 15 December 1831 and their son Donald BROWN was christened at Inverchaolain on 26 January 1833. It appears that Daniel died soon after that, since a second marriage is recorded to Duncan BAXTER on 12 May 1836. If anyone has information about Daniel's death or what happened to the child Donald, I would be delighted to hear from them. Margaret had 11 children to her second husband but Donald BROWN does not show among them in the subsequent censuses. Mary Hamilton

I hope to have all World War 1 within the next couple of days. Hi, I'm confused! Was it at all normal to name your first son after your father in law? I've seen it several times and, whilst applauding the fathers tact, I've always thought they usually named the child after the fathers father? Could it have been because the wife's family was better off? I wonder if any kind soul out there has access to the 1851 census? I'm trying to confirm a family I found many years ago (and didn't keep proper notes about!). The family group would be in Ardchattan parish, Argyll, and included Gilbert MacIntyre, 74; Flory, 70; Donald, 47; Ann; Archibald, 42; and Cathrine, 25. Can anyone find this family and give me any details I've missed? TIA TIA TIA!! Sheila

Hello Argyll, I am new to this list and would be thrilled if anyone has any connections with or ideas regarding my Argyllshire ancestors. My GGG-Grandmother was Mary McNeil born on the Isle of Gigha in 1799. She had somehow reached Ayrshire and married Ronald Morrison there in 1824. Her parents were Murdoch McNeil and Catherine McGougan who married in 1789 in Killean and Kilchenzie. They seem to have produced many children on Gigha but I don't know how to follow them. I can't find Murdoch McNeil's birth nor Catherine McGougan's either. I've sent for the Gigha PRs but they have not arrived yet. Many thanks for any help. Mary in Australia
The Book you are referring to, A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada, is available from AddAll.com for various different prices. The descriptions tell you a little about the contents of the book. "Biographical/genealogical notes on 11,213 Scots who settled in Canada in the period prior to Confederation (1867)." I hope this helps. Grace Macdougall Mynatt

Hi All, My name is Jackie and I live in Scottsdale, Arizona. My Mother is from Paisley and my Father from Glasgow. (My Father's family was from Argyll.) They immigrated with my 2 brothers in the 1950's to Canada and then immigrated to the USA. I have done a lot of research on my family and have gathered many birth/death/marriage certificates. I have been on the list for a while, but due to an illness and death in the family, I have not been actively researching and I am just getting around to posting my surname interests now. I apologize to anyone who receives this twice. I am going to post all my surnames now (with spelling variants I have found in parenthesis) and will come back and post specifics for each name in individual emails. If anyone on the list is researching the same names as I am, let me know, and I will start "getting specific" on those names first.
