    1. [ARGYLL] unopened e-mail
    2. Dear Francis Hunter, I am writing to you on list as I am unable to access your audio e-mail dated June 15,2002 that you sent regarding (Argyll) Cullintrach & Laggan Farms. I have also been unable to write you off-list as your email address maniacs@cw.com.net have all been returned to me as undeliverable. If you should still wish to make contact then please answer off-list using the more conventional letter form of e-mail. Sincerely---Bruce Arnott, USA

    3. Andrea Going through my em.mails I notice another query regarding Lagganbuie and Craigmore. Yes they are both in Dalmally, an area on the northern side of the River Orchy which is opposite the village itself. There were Campbells living in Craigmore until quite recently, the last to live there, I think died a few years ago, the rest of the family having now scattered. If I can be of any help please do not hesitate to contact me Jean ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrea & Noel" <andreanoel@dragon.net.au> To: <SCT-ARGYLL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 19, 2002 8:41 AM Subject: [ARGYLL] Burials after 1900 ?? > Hi, > I am looking for some burials, I assume in the Glen Orchy district. 3. Glenorchy is a wide area comprising several villages so your relatives could be in one of several graveyards. My parents are buried in one - village called Dalmally and if I can manage it I will have a look for your relatives there when I am in Scotland in September. In the meantime if you have any more details - addresses for instance it would be helpful Jean Reynolds ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrea & Noel" <andreanoel@dragon.net.au> To: <SCT-ARGYLL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 19, 2002 8:41 AM Subject: [ARGYLL] Burials after 1900 ?? > Hi, > I am looking for some burials, I assume in the Glen Orchy district. 2. Sheena Smith
    3. Hi Carla, I ordered the 1851 UK census on CD-ROM from America only to discover it was the same bits and pieces I could pick up on the web. To add insult to injury I then received a bill for duty and VAT. Apparently all new goods imported into the EU are subject to duty and VAT, if the value is over £18.00. The duty and VAT is paid not only on the value of the goods, but also the transportation and handling costs. If you return the goods keep your receipt as proof of return. Sheena. Scotland.

    2. Les Horn
    3. Andrea from Melborne AUS asked about the address her CAMPBELLs were at in the 1901 Census. . Although I haven't seen the particular entry I can make an educated guess : . All are at the southern end of Glen Orchy near Dalmally on the B8077 between Lochawe village and Dalmally. -- UK National Grid Ref NN 155 285 . Lagganbuie is 1ml (1.6km) west of Dalmally . Craigmore is 2ml (3.2km) west of Dalmally . NE of Craigmore are the ruins of "Tigh Mor" (Big House) - this may well have bee known by another name at the turn of the 18/19th Century - possibly Achacouaiel. The nearest Gaelic I can come up with is Ach a'cuaille - club/cudgel field or Ach a'cuailean - lock/curl (of hair) field. . I'll have a look at the actual 1901 Census entry and at the earlier ones to see if can find out what it is actlly called, and anything else of interest. . Best wishes Les Onich Inverness-shire

Can some one with a bit of knowledge of local place names please help ??? This is what it looks like Achacouaiel(i?) Glenorchy, the places next to it are Lagganbuie, Lagganbuie Cottage and Craigmore. Whatever this place was it sounds big, with 23 rooms with one or more windows. Any help most appreciated Regards Andrea Melbourne Australia

    1. [ARGYLL] Re: Buying from Ellis Island site
    2. Carla Salveta
    3. Just a note to warn people about buying from the Ellis Island site if you live outside the US. I ordered a page of a ship's manifest and took the large size which cost $35. This turned out to be a piece of paper which had been blown up on the copier so that there were large black areas around the edges (the type you get when you photocopy something smaller than the size of paper it's going on) - no way would I frame it like that. But even worse was the postage they charged $24!!! for a piece of paper sent in a tube - no way it cost more than $5 to send. On the site for overseas orders it says that postage will be added depending on where it's going but gives no indications of any of costs I made the mistake of assuming they would have reasonable postage rates. I also made the mistake of ordering a logo frame of the page which is the board for framing a photo which has an Ellis Island Logo on it. This cost $20 and the postage was $17.30. I complained via e-mail and got no response so e-mailed again and got a response which said it does say postage is added. I was totally disappointed with what I received and disgusted with the postal charges so would warn anyone (especially outside the US) not to bother. It's just as easy to copy the information from the screen as to bother buying their poor product. Carla Salveta (Scotland)

    1. [ARGYLL] Re: SCT-ARGYLL-D Digest V02 #120 (Cumlodden Parish)
    2. Katrina Cumlodden was a quoad sacra parish (that is one created for religious purposes only) about the middle of the 19th century (1853?), made out of the northern portion of the old parish of Glassary. It lies on the west side of Loch Fyne about 10 miles south of Inveraray. It has no registers in the OPR series; the relevant OPRs are those of Glassary. There may, however, be baptismal rolls, communicant rolls and Kirk Session minutes available either in the National Archives of Scotland or in the Argyll and Bute Archive. These will not, of course, cover any events before the parish was set up. Frank Bigwood
