RE ST MUNDAS ISLE RECORD S , THERE IS A LOCAL LISTING OF MOST GRAVES WHICH HAS A MEMORIAL STONE ERECTED OF WHICH I HAVE A COPY , IF YOU LET ME KNOW WHO YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ,I WILL HAVE A SEARCH , ROB
When Donald Leitch Macintyre died (26 March 1903, Montreal), his wife Annie had a headstone erected for him and one for his parents. They lived at Loch Aline (Lochaline?) in Morvern. The grave is at the "auld kirk", now a ruin. The tombstone was engraved with "Schoolmaster of this village" after his father's name. I do not know their given names, nor am I sure the names of Donald's brother or brothers and sister. Can anyone advise how to get a trancsription of the cemetery, or at least that stone? Because formal recording of B M Ds in Scotland commenced in 1855 it has been the practice, for expediency, for local history societies to only record MIs upto 1855. . I presume you have seen David Cargill & Barbara Fairweather's list of 1969. . For deaths after 1855 the SRO at New Register House in Edinburgh holds all details. Have you tried the website http://www.origins.net ? It may be possible to get them from the Registrars office in Fort William as I believe he covers Ballachulish now. . As Ballachulish was in the former Strathclyde Region the Glasgow Registrar has microfiche and a computer index of the statutory registers at the Genealogy Centre in Park Circus, Glasgow. > -----Original Message----- > From: janet.wilson@dcsi.net.au (Janet Wilson) > Sent: Sat Aug 31 23:44:34 BST 2002 > To: SCT-ARGYLL-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ARGYLL] Burials on Isla Munda > > > Hello Everyone, > > I'm supposing that there would be a later listing of burials than the one I > have seen which lists burials to 1855. Good Afternoon All, Oral family History for my Annand ancestors says that my Great Grandfather, George ANNAND, b April 13 1817 Bonhill, Dumbarton, the son of Robert Annand and Christian MacGregor was a Cousin of the Earl of Mar and the 9th Duke of Argyll. How could I go about researching this? Helene Helene J Hayes Pakenham, Vic mungungo@nex.net.au
Does anyone know where Coishindrochit, North Knapdale is located? I've been unable to locate it. Could SKS suggest any alternate spellings? According to Donald Whyte's book, Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation, Donald McGugan b. 1791 d. 1857 came from Coishindrochit, North Knapdale. He was the son of Neil McGugan and Elspeth Campbell. He married Mary McAlpine 29 Mar 1813. The family emigrated to the Talbot Settlement in 1819 and settled in Dunwich Twp. Any help with this location would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Anne
Hello Listers My interests lie with the surnames, McEachern, McCallum and Kennedy. I have Alexander McEachern married possibly to Janet McCallum and they had about 10 children. Their son Dougald c. 28 Jul 1815, Kilmeny Argyll, Scotland married Margaret Kennedy b. abt. 1819, Scotland and they had 6 children born in Scotland the last a son born in Ontario. They immigrated to Canada in around 1861 and according to the 1871 and 1881 Census' they lived in the Simcoe County area of Ontario. If anyone has any ties to this family please contact me. Regards and happy hunting Lynn Alberta, Canada
I am posting my research interests in and around ELGIN COUNTY, CANADA and ARGYLLSHIRE, SCOTLAND and also MULL. My gg grandparents, DONALD MCPHAIL (1811-1895) and ANN MCCOLL (1819-1914) emigrated from Kilvaree, Muckairn Parish, Argyll, Scotland to Elgin County, Scotland about 1884. They had ten children. Three sons Dugald (1846-?), John (1848-1921), and Archibald (1862-?) remained in Scotland and were involved in policing. Two other sons, Alexander Campbell McPhail (1854-1944) and Duncan (1852-?) preceded DONALD and ANN MCPHAIL, to Canada, arriving about 1882. I believe that they may have stayed with MCCOLL relatives already in Elgin County. I have no information about a son named Donald, born in 1850. He may have died young and the name Donald re-used as a second Donald appears in the family, born in 1867. There were four daughters: Mary, Margaret, Isobella and Ann. Mary McPhail (1845-?) married Donald/Duncan McKenzie and was last heard of in Michigan or Ohio. Margaret (1857-1935) married Joseph Wilton and resided in Elgin County. Isobella (1860-?) may have returned to Scotland and possibly to Lochgilphead. Annie (1865-1956) married William Henry Lethbridge, and then George Dadson, and resided in either Fingal or Shedden. To summarize: Dugald, John and Archibald stayed in uk / Scotland - Dugald in Barrow on Furness, Archibald near Stirling, and John at Kilvaree (after a stint as innkeeper at Ulva in Mull) Alexander and Duncan came to Canada about 1882 - Duncan married another Ann McColl and aended up in British Columbia Mary and Duncan/Donald McKenzie may have emigrated separately (they married in Scotland) - they ended up in Michigan or Ohio Donald and Ann McPhail, with Donald, Margaret, Isobella and Ann, with Margaret's son Duncan, may have emigrated as a group. Family history has it that there were seven tickets. Questions I am trying to answer: 1. Who and where are the descendents of Dugald and Archibald? (UK) 2. Who and where are Duncan's descendents? (BC, Canada) 3. What happened to Mary's descendents? (Mi, USA) 4. Who and where are Isabella's descendents? (Lochgilphead?) I have much information about John McPhail my g grandfather and that line. I am seeking information about his siblings. Looking forward to hearing from others researching this family. Margaret
Next question: Were the ages of people listed in this census rounded off in some way? Any idea why?? For the person who was looking for a Cowan ancestor: There are a bunch in Ardchattan parish in the 1841 census. Sheila
Could someone please tell me if they know of this farm. I am not 100% sure of the spelling. On the 1851 census Alexander Taylor, his wife Margaret Walker and his daughters Mary and Christina lived on a farm where he was a shepherd. The farm's name was Toberavist (I believe). The farm was owned by John McKellar. The listings are found on Pages 15 and 16 and are items # 62 and 63. The farm appears to be located between farms called Glacanalachie and South Carnbeg. I would appreciate any information that anyone could give to me. Lorraine Dunning Ontario, Canada

Hi Lorraine, Sorry not to get back to you sooner. The 1881 shows no Alice or Roderick or Richard Cowan for Argyllshire. These are the only ones in any part of the Highlands. Hello List, Can anyone tell me if any or all of the 1851, 1861, 1871 census returns for Argyll have been indexed and where and how they may be accessed, please? I am interested the parishes of Saddell/Skipness and Kilcalmonell/Kilberry. Before I order in each of the films from the LDS, I would like to know if the families I am interested in are there. My thanks for any help. Regards Ailsa Petrie Hamilton New Zealand
Hi to all interested, I am researching a Doctor John McKenzie who was supposed to have gone to the Americas, I don't Know where around 1830's plus/minus ten years, with his wife Margaret and two young sons. The doctor died in America of plague/yellow fever, and family returned to America. Question: is there a list of all passengers to have disembarked in the US for all persons. There is a publication Passenger and Immigration Lists Index: A guide to Published Records 1538-1900 (Detroit: Gale Research 2d ed, 1988 later edition to 1981 as a companion to Index. Could this book have our John McKenzie and Family listed in it? Also, I would be grateful to anyone having these volumns/books for perusal to look up these names for me and help in this search. Dates are also very important as we do not know these details. Thank you all, Maria McKenzie
