    1. [ARGYLL] Re: Sources of information on murder 1897
    2. Carla Salveta
    3. Can anyone tell me if there are any newspapers or other sources available in libraries which would have covered a murder in Campbeltown in May 1897? I have a death certificate where the amended certificate states that the injuries were inflicted by the husband but there is no reference to a Fatal Accident Inquiry. I understand the husband was jailed for her murder and their only child was sent to Quarriers Home and later to Canada and that her father joined her there after his release from prison. Is it likely that a murder in Campbeltown would have been covered by newspapers such as the Glasgow Herald or would it have been too far away and where would the court proceedings have taken place? Can anyone living locally tell me whether next weekend is a holiday in Campbeltown as it is in Glasgow? Thanks for any advice offered Carla Salveta

    3. Dear Col Many thanks for this information. Every bit helps to complete the picture. What a shame it was demolished. I'd love to have seen it. I'm busy acquiring information and wills left by Robert's descendants in an attempt to locate any living today. I'm descended from Robert's brother. Again many thanks Lori Australia -----Original Message----- From: CaledonC@aol.com [mailto:CaledonC@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2002 6:44 PM To: SCT-ARGYLL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ARGYLL] North Bar(r) In a message dated 11/09/02 23:21:47 GMT Daylight Time, SCT-ARGYLL-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: > Does Northbar still exist? Am most interested in finding information on McColls in the area. There is a strong suspicion that brothers emigrated together. Any information on the family will be sincerely appreciated. Dorothy

    3. I'm trying to trace a John McDougall born somewhere on Mull in 1863/4 and when I posted a few days ago and kindly soul forwarded me the information below. **The following is from the 1881 Kilninian and Kilmore census district 7 page 2 at Balligown Farm House. McDougall, John 51 M Head Crofter McDougall, John 18 M son Gardener Domestic Servant McDougall, Myles 11 M son Scholar McDougall, Sarah 9 F dau Scholar McDougall, Malcolm 7 M son Scholar ** Now, out of the likely suspects I have to date I think that this John could very well be mine due to his profession. By 1891 John McDougall was working at the Ardgartan House near Lochgoilhead Argyll as a gardener. In 1891 he married a Hughina Catherine Mather in Tain and in 1901 husband and wife and 3 sons were living and working at Ardgartan. Does anyone out there have any idea's how I can try to verify if this John (or any of the others) are in fact my John. Katrina

Seeking any (MAC)GILCHRIST'S from Kilmichael Glassary, Rothsay, Isle of Bute, Glasgow and Northbar - particularly 1600's and 1700's but more recently too. Does Northbar still exist? I understand it was a mansion-like house in it's day. Also, where exactly is/was it? One Donald MacGilchrist was a sheriff depute on Isle of Bute during the mid 1600's. Any clues as to where I may find more info about this? Any information greatly appreciated. Regards Lori Australia

    3. Hello: I have accessed both the changed Scots Origins and the new "scotlandspeople". The latter appears to be the website we have grown used to, only run by a different. I had to register as a new user. Scots Origins, who no longer seem to be running the GRO site, have continued on. I did not have to register as a new user. However, when I accessed anything I ended up on the IGI (Mormon) site which I have found to be less accurate that the GRO site. So I guess its "scotlandspeople" for me from now on. 3. Hello everyone, I hope this is not too much of a silly question. I have an O.P.R. listing for the marriage of John MC DONALD and Marjory JOHNSON at Calert, Argyll in 1813. On the same page is a marriage listed as taking place at Glenevis. Marjory Johnson is said to have been born in Inverness at Glenevis. It would seem therefore that she may well have been born at Glenevis, Argyll, and not in Inverness at all. Can someone please shed some light on this? - Janet Wilson.

Such a service has not=20 previously been available, and by providing access to more recent=20 events it addresses a problem often encountered particularly by new =20 researchers into their family history researchers who hit a block=20 with their grandparents' generation. The Scots Origins Sighting Service will be complemented by an=20 improved facility, available only from Scots Origins, for searching=20 the International Genealogical Index (IGI). The Scottish records in=20 this index have helpful additional fields to assist resolve=20 ambiguities in identifying events where the parties have common=20 names, but the IGI also has some weaknesses in respect of place name=20 searching which the new facility overcomes. Scots Origins Sighting Service The Scots Origins Sighting Service allows users to order via the web=20 details of entries in the old parish registers and the statutory=20 registers for Scotland of births and marriages from 1700 up to 1990=20 and deaths from 1855 to 1990, plus details of entries in the 1861 and=20 1871 censuses. The transcribed details, which include all the key=20 information contained in the original entries, are emailed to the=20 user within 5 working days.=20 The cost of this service is =A38 (approx. US$12) per "sighting"=20 request.=20 Comparison with other services. =20 The General Register Office for Scotland does not provide online=20 indexes to records later than 1901 in the case of births, nor does it=20 take orders online for the later records, but only by phone or post=20 for hard copies of the register entries (extracts). Even with the=20 online indexes, users often cannot identify the relevant event due to=20 lack of detail in the index records. The Scots Origins Sighting=20 Service gets round these issues and, while it does not presently=20 offer hard copies of the original entries, it is considerable cheaper=20 than the GROS service. The latter costs =A316 for extracts ordered=20 over the web or =A313 for orders placed by post or phone =96 and the=20 delivery delay can be several weeks. Although an increasing=20 proportion of GROS records will become available online in digitised=20 image form, records of births less than 100 years ago or marriages=20 less than 75 years ago are unlikely to be available on the web,=20 making the Scots Origins Sighting Service of especial value to family=20 history researchers who can often be stuck just two generations back. Scottish Place Name Database=20 This free service allows users to identify the county and parish=20 within which particular places are located. This information can be=20 a great help in tracking down source documents, and will be an=20 invaluable adjunct to the new Scots Origins Sighting Service. Users=20 may search on arbitrary place names, including those of streets or=20 even houses. This facility will be particularly helpful to those=20 wanting to find someone on either the 1861 or 1871 census. The=20 database has been based upon 1881 census data, with the agreement of=20 the General Register Office for Scotland and the Church of Jesus=20 Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Enhanced and FREE access to OPR and Statutory Register index data Our improved interface to the IGI will allows searching of the=20 Scottish records directly by parish, which is not possible on the=20 Family Search web site. For the period up to 1875 over 90% of the=20 birth and marriage records which are in the GROS indexes are also=20 within the IGI. In the IGI you will often find both birth date and=20 baptism date included, while the GROS index almost invariably has=20 only one or the other. And for records of births in the 1855 to 1875=20 period, the IGI almost invariably has the parents' names, in contrast=20 to the GROS index where this is rarely the case. =20 For further information about this service, please contact=20 jane@origins.net ------------------------------------------------------- This message comes from the Scots Origins Discussion Group, sponsored by Scots Origins (www.origins.net), the official website for family history information from Scotland, to reply send an email to scots-origins@yahoogrou= ps.com To unsubscribe send a blank email to: scots-origins-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.= com =20 Your use of Yahoo! The GROS indexes and images we currently provide will no longer be available on Scots Origins from 1 September. We have little information about the new GROS services and if you want to know more you may wish to contact them directly (records@gro-scotland.gov.uk). We would like to thank all of you for your support over the past few years, as we built up and fine-tuned the Scots Origins services in response to your many welcome inputs. But Scots Origins continues to develop, and we trust that you will find the new services we are introducing of value to you. You will probably have received already a separate mailing about our new "Sighting Service" and some related services, one of which is an improved interface to the International Genealogical Index. This - as many of you are aware - contains indexes to much of the GROS material. The latter service (which is free) will allow you to search the IGI by parish, which is not currently possible on Family Search. We are working on some other major projects concerning important Scottish genealogical material which we hope to be able to tell you more about soon. We are as committed as we always have been to developing new and high quality services to the genealogical community (like our recently introduced Origin Search service) and as well as continuing to develop Scots Origins, we have several major projects about to begin covering other important British Isles genealogical data. We will keep you informed. I hope that you will continue to find the Scots Origins discussion group a useful means of sharing your interests in our mutual Scottish ancestry. 3. Have a question for all of you. I was at the Scotorigins web site recently & found an interesting message. The service will be discontinued, but you can reaccess your older (but more recent) downloads, etc. Anyone know what the change will entail? Best thoughts to all, Joy in MO

    3. I just happened to see something on this tonight while I was browsing. It looks like Scots Origins is being phased out. The new site where you can access General Register House for Scotland is at: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It was all new to me so we should watch it for a few days to see if that is correct. Does anyone else know? Mary

    3. Hi Lorraine and Listers, I found another address for the 1851 2% Census Survey, at PEDIGREES and PEOPLE. Lorraine and I could not get through on the Dead Person's Society Link. Try this one: http://web.ukonline.co.uk/sheila.jones/ceninfo.htm Hope you find someone on the survey! Jackie (in Scottsdale, Arizona USA) Hi Jane, http://home.vicnet.net.au/~dpsoc/scots.htm This is the address for the Scotland page, but look at the bottom too for great links for Ireland, OZ, NZ, USA, GB, Italy, and much more. > From: Jane Sherwood > Sent: Sunday, August 18, 2002 4:31 PM > To: Jackie Thorpe > Subject: Re: [ARGYLL] Re: 1851 2% Census > > Hi Jackie, What is The Dead Person's Society site?
