Hi Joy, well the local story is that Govan people have a saying that goes like this " Your not a Govanite unless you've been ducked in the Elder pond" Which is in the Elder Park in Govan. I was born in Plantation district Govan in a nursing home, but was raised in Mount Vernon on the other side of Glasgow, so that was my little joke for those that know the meaning, that I cannot really call my self a Govanite, just because I was born there! >From: Joy <beatsme@netins.net> >To: SCT-ARGYLL-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [ARGYLL] Plantation, Scotland >Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2002 17:24:47 -0500 > >Jimmy, >Hello ~ It sounds like there is a local story to tell there. Lorraine It's in Lanarkshire, in what would now be Glasgow, south of the River Clyde - near Govan, I believe. With the increasing industrialisation of Scotland in the 19th century, it's entirely possible that descendants of an Argyll family could have fetched up there - some of my relations did. Jimmy, Hello ~ It sounds like there is a local story to tell there. Can you share it? Last summer I checked a new service on the web www.scottishdocuments.com and I found about sixty family wills . This week I found 119 wills and downloaded one for John McCall of Mid Shynnell, Dumfries Scotland in 1576. The process was efficient and now I am trying to read a document much like CanterburyTales. Fortunately I have a will of Iwie McCall of Guffolkland in 1585 already translated, to help read. I'm looking forward to additional wills being offered and hope you will find this service useful. It can reduce the trips to Edinburgh. Maybe this service will grow? Good Hunting, Ron McCall
I am anxiously awaiting for them to get round to having available the areas I need. Found some "likely suspect" names and will order when they finally become available. Hello eveyone, I see on the Scotland Marriage Index and the Death Index two individuals that may be a connection for me. Both events occurred in Plantation. Does anyone know where that is? It could be anywhere in Scotland, not just Argyll. Lorraine Beitz Ontario Canada
Hi, I am new to this list and am researching these folks. I understand that this family has been fairly well researched and I am hoping someone out there may have a bit more than I have. The branch I am looking for have John Thomson-Catherine McMillan, Neil Currie-Betsy McLean,Dugald McDougall-Catherine Currie and Duncan McNiven-Jean Stewart in the line up. I have a direct family tree but no siblings for anyone until I get down to the level of the 1881 census where I have been able to gather up a few brothers and sisters for those around at that time. Any information I could get would be very gratefully received. Lorraine Johnston.

Kenmore on Loch Fyne ?? The Kenmore is an attractive village at the east end of Loch TAY ! Part of Breadalbane it is very much Campbell country . The somewhat decrepit pile of Taymouth Castle was once an American school but is now a " dangerous building " in terms of the act . Queen Vic and Albert stayed there and admired the plasterwork and internal architecture . The place to find McCalls aplenty is in the churchyard at Ballachulish in Appin and Lismore Parish at the end of Glencoe . Unusual as it is Episcopalian and not Church of Scotland . Col frae Crieff
Many places and things in states are named Kenmore. On TV last nite, the X-Files were in Kenmore NY. Sears has an appliance line named Kenmore. Recently it was said that George Washington slept at Kenmore, the house of his sister. Some of the earliest McCalls are from Kenmore Scotland on Loch Fyne. Evan McColl, the gaelic poet, was born at Kenmore in 1808. Sir John McCall was born at Kenmore in 1520 . When writers are unable to determine where a McCall ancestor came from, they often suggest Loch Fyne. The spelling of the surname suggests that McCalls at Kenmore came from Bute according to George Black's,Surnames of Scotland. Can anyone share information about Kenmore and the Mccalls of Kenmore and Bute, who later moved to Dumfriesshire? Thanks, Ron McCall
Hi everyone, I am researching Dougal MCCONNACHIE who was born about 1823 in Campbeltown, Scotland. His father may have been Angus or John MCCONNACHIE and his mother possibly Margaret BELL. He may have had brothers, named Duncan & Angus. It appears that he left Scotland and came to Canada about 1850 or 1851. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much, Beverly
I've traced my McAlister ancestors back to an Angus McAlester who married Mary McCallum in 1820 at Campbeltown, Scotland. They had 7 or 8 children who include in birth order John, James, Isabella, Angus, Duncan, Neil, born between 1821 and 1834 at Campbeltown. All the sons named except John ended up in Mobile, Alabama in the 1850s, perhaps joined by a cousin Duncan McCallum(b ~1830). Yet to have any luck tracing Mary McCallum or Angus McAlester. There were at least a dozen Mary McCallums christened in and around Campbeltown in just 1803 and 1804(according to LDS records) Any connections for anyone there?
