Liz There seems to be no Rootsweb list for Elgin equivalent to this one for Argyll, but you might find it worthwhile to investigate Rootsweb's SCT-NECOAST list, which has a slightly broader coverage, describing itself as "A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the fishing villages on the northeast coast of Scotland, from Nairn to the southern boundary of Kincardine including Aberdeen, and their connection with the sea". In case it helps, the county in which Elgin is located has been called at different times both Elginshire and Morayshire. Several weeks ago someone posted a query about the Hall family of Southend. I would like to contact that person, but now I cannot find the posting. I am a descendant of Janet Hall of Southend. I have sketchy information about a couple of Robert Halls and James Halls of Southend and have pieced together a tentative family tree based on information from Keil Cemetery and other records. I would be happy to exchange information. Janet Morrison

On the 1841 census (Morvern, section 4) I find Donald McIntyre, schoolmaster, living at Claigin, which had 2 households at the time. Two years earlier, his location had been given as Claigan. Those must be the same with allowance for spelling variation. Now all I can find on maps is a place called Claggan, near Lochaline. Would this be the same place? Was there a school there or nearby? Can anyone fill me in on the place? Judith Port Moody, BC, Canada
Keep in mind that "N" was perfectly legitimate. It was the abbreviation for Nic, the feminine of Mac/Mc, and meant "daughter of" in Gaelic. My own great-great was listed as Isable, and was Isabella in later life. My MacNivens were listed in at least one census as Niven. And my great-gran MacDougall was born MacDougald, sometimes spelled McDougal, McDugald, MacDugald, etc. Happy hunting! Sheila
