Wouldn't you know - I boobed again. Several folk have very kindly advised me that the address I gave last time did not work. Quite correct they were too. But this one should - www.rootsweb.com/~sctelnfc/east.htm/east.htm My apologies . Mary Hamilton proud to be associated with the UK FreeCENS project.
Absolutely overwhelmed at the fantastic response to my plea for volunteers for transcribing. Our web page is now up and running at www.rootsweb.com/~sctelnfc/east.html Do visit us. All the parishes have now been assigned and the fiche should be posted out this week. Mary Hamilton
Dear All, I am in the process of setting up a new genealogical web site, which I hope will be a little different, that is aimed at those researching within the UK. One of the sections is quite ambitious. I would like to create a list of researchers covering ALL the counties within the United Kingdom. If there are any researchers present in this list who carry out research in Argyllshire and would like their details added (for free!) to my web site, please contact me off-list at the e-mail address below. Many thanks Sue Shade -- Sue Shade mailto:sue@shadenet.co.uk
I am pleased to announce that the East Lothian Free Census project is ready to roll. This is part of the UK Free Census Project - an internet-based "free-to-view" database which will allow researchers to view details of UK Censuses between the years 1841 to 1891. I am county coordinator for East Lothian and we are starting with the 1841 census. I am appealing for volunteers to act as transcribers for all the East Lothian parishes. People with a personal interest in East Lothian would be particularly welcome. All you need to take part in this global on-line venture is a computer and access to a microfiche reader. We supply the fiche and the software. This is a chance for ordinary family historians to make a personal contribution to our great hobby. If you are interested in learning more please contact me Mary Hamilton at MAH.Rodney@xtra.co.nz An overview of the UK FreeCEN project can be found at http://freecen.rootsweb.com . An overview of the Scotland FreeCEN project can be found at http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland/scotland.html H.M.S.A. and the L.D.S. have blessed this project, but we do need your help. Thank you, Mary Hamilton East Lothian Coordinator.

There is a Kingshouse in Perthshire - a bit out of the way for what you need though. This one is about 3 miles SW of Lochearnhead, and just E of Balquhidder. Hopefully somebody will get you the right one - Jack. ----- Original Message ----- From: ROSEMARY MEECHAN To: SCT-ARGYLL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, November 17, 2002 10:05 PM Subject: [ARGYLL] Looking for Kingshouse, Glenorchy I know that there is a King's House on Rannoch Moor- and I have enjoyed the odd drink in it- but has anybody heard of the Kingshouse, Glenorchy? Mary McDiarmid, the daughter of my ancestor Henry Tyson, died there in 1872. She had been living wih her son -who was a schoolmaster in Glenorchy -at the time of the 1871 census. I was also wondering if she was buried in the churchyard in Dalmally. Does anybody know is there is a list of monumental inscriptions for this graveyard? HI I've been wondering what the words are to the Scottish National anthem. Saw it performed at the Tattoo (on TV), but nothing else about it since anywhere? Much appreciated. Martyn - you must be a Leither ! Col
It's a moot point and definitely off topic, but I'm with Col on this one. I would describe Leith as lying to the East of Edinburgh too....And I see where he is coming from when he says that it lies behind Holyrood Palace- Arthurs Seat is to the side of Holyrood House in my minds eye so as you say, it must just depend on where you are standing! I wonder what the people of Leith think about their port being described as 'The Port of Edinburgh' though! To my recollection, they got a bit funny about things like that! Lorraine Johnston
The best way of finding the local of Leith is from Princess st you go west down Leith walk to the bottom then turn right into the Leith dockland area which is now a very up market yuppie area, the old properties having been renovated and modernised for housing, hotels, and quality restaurants and pubs etc., if one goes to http://www.multimap.com and picks out Edinburgh on the map then reduces the map until they find Leith this will give everyone a better idea of the layout. Col I'm a bit puzzled by your answer. Leith is nearer north than east of central Edinburgh - it is in fact the port of Edinburgh. Whether it is "behind" Holyrood Palace is a matter of opinion, depending which way you're facing, but I guess that most people living here (I'm in Edinburgh at present) would say that Arthur's Seat (a hill) is the feature most evidently behind the Palace - it's certainly much nearer, but to the south. You're right about Britannia.
