    1. [ARGYLL] MCLACHLAN/CAMPBELL
    2. Brian Maye
    3. G'day Still seeking my MCLACHLAN/CAMPBELL connections from Argyllshire Scotland and Australia. Dugald MCLACHLAN and Peggy CAMPBELL had children Katrine ch 1825, Janet (b 1826) resident on Laudle (sic); John (b 1832) Fuinary; Isobel (b 1835) Uladle (sic); Peggy (b 1837) Ulladle (sic), possibly Ewan/Hugh later. Dugald's parents possibly Dugald MCLACHLAN and Mary MCEACHERN. Dugald & Peggy do not seem to have followed the tradition naming pattern or there are children I have not been able to discover .. have been to Edinburgh to new Reg House .. The son John came to Australia date uncertain. What happened to the rest of the family? I believe that John came to AUS with a brother but that once here they lost touch with each other. John, my great grandfather, was a drover in NSW. Would be most grateful for any info. I think Dugald died near Fuinary/Fiunary (OS maps I have contradict each other on this spelling). Ulladle (var) is a location just north of Lochaline in Morvern, in Argyllshire. Anne Maye

    1. [ARGYLL] CAMERON from Ballachulish area
    2. Cathy
    3. Hi list, I too have a CAMERON family from around the Ballachulish area some of which came to Australia. I have Donald CAMERON b 1822 (baptised Lismore Scotland) son of Angus CAMERON (farmer of Inchree) and Christina MCINTYRE. I can't for the like of me find when he came to Australia, but probably to Victoria and was here by 1852. He was my great grandfather. His sister, Clementina (b circa 1825) married Donald MCDONALD and also emigrated to Australia, but not sure where or when as yet. Other siblings od Donald and Clementina were Hugh (b circa 1824) reported to be master of a ship that sank - can't find anything on this as yet. Also, Sarah (b 1826) married Donald CAMERON (another one), Margaret b circa 1828) married Arch CAMERON and Joanna (b circa 1830) married Duncan MACKAY. If anyone has any connection to any of these families I would be more than happy to hear from you and share my information. All the best, Cathy, Blue Mountians, NSW, Australia. 3. Hello Heather, In regard to what might have happened on the voyages to Australia I suggest two things. First, there are reports in the papers of the day about the arrival of such ships and if you check for a few days either side you may learn a bit about the voyage, what was on board and how the immigrants were disposed of. Second, in the NSW State Archives you can find the reports of the immigration commissioners on the voyages. Sometimes these are quite cursory, but in other cases you can learn about complaints by the passengers, misconduct by crew etc. The Commissioners seem to have taken their job very seriously and were thorough in investigating any problems. I have written the above assuming you are in Australia. If not, maybe something can be organised. Best wishes, John in Canberra ----- Original Message ----- From: "Heather Oldham" <moldham@bigpond.net.au> To: <SCT-ARGYLL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2003 10:00 PM Subject: [ARGYLL] CAMERON/McKINNON/HENDERSON/McPHERSON/McDONALD/CAMPBELL/McMASTERS > Hi Everyone > > My ancestors left the area around Ballachulish to walk (most probably) to Inverness and onto Cromarty to meet the ship "Boyne" which took them to Australia in 1838/1839. The Inverness Courier has been published since 1817. It's historic copies are not on line. However, there is hard copy of those from 1817 to 1884 and on microfilm from 1885 to 1975. I believe that the library in Inverness has them. Both the Highland Family History Society, who have a room there, and Alastair MacLeod the Genealogist in the Highland Council Archives department will certainly have access to them. However I would post your query to the Inverness-shire list first.as someone nearer Inverness may take it up for you : SCT-Inverness-l@Rootsweb.com You may be interested in the following site which deals with Emigrants from Inverness. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maddenps/INVEM1.htm Best Wishes Les

    3. Hi Garth This family of Campbell leaving Scotland are listed below. Both John Campbell's parents died when he was very young, and he was raised by his grandfather. Apparently his father was a deep-sea Captain and was their only child. John and Christina Campbell (nee McDonald) emigrated to Australia from the Isle of Skye on the ship: "William Nicol". Departure date was 6 July 1837. Port of Departure - Hebrides. Number of emigrants - 321. They arrived in Australia on 27 October 1837 and spent their early years in the Colony in the Hunter River region where most of their children were born. In 1854 in the company of four other settler families they were amongst the first to travel overland from the Hunter River region to the Manning River to settle on the Dingo Creek at "Green Hills". Are any of these Campbell's in your family? Regards Heather 1. JOHN1 CAMPBELL, SENIOR was born Abt. 1809 in Armadale, Isle of Skye, Scotland., and died 27 November 1894 in Buried Wingham Cemetery.. 3. Hi Margaret and Edd, This is a list of the passengers on the Jupiter of Larne. You'll notice a lot of passengers listed as "McCole." I think this is probably "McColl." Many of my McCormick and Carmichael families are buried in the Stewartsville Cemetery in Richmond Co. (later Scotland County), North Carolina. This cemetery also has many "McColls" listed......most of the early settlers who were buried in this cemetery were from Appin, Argyllshire, Scotland, and many came on the Jupiter of Larne. But I don't recall any "McColes" buried in there, so it makes more sense that "McCole" is actually "McColl." But I don't know for sure, I'll check the cemetery survey first chance I get. McColls married into both my McCormick and Carmichael families. Did any of your McColls settle in Richmond County? I have a lot of Scottish passenger and immigrant books. Are there any names I can look up for you? (I'm afraid there'll probably be too many choices instead of none......so many people had the same given and surnames. But I'll be happy to check.)
