    3. Les For what it's worth, I think you said it right the first time. I for one was in no doubt that the last part of your sentence referred to Mull, not K&K. 3. Fellow listers My apologies !! I wrote. >Kilninian (& Kilmore) Parish is in the north of the Island of Mull which has its own list. I'll forward your query to it. I meant that Mull has it's own list NOT K&K. I was replying to an Argyll lister, who didn't know that Mull had declared UDI from the rest of Argyll. and was forwarding his/her query. Teach me to write what I mean AND to mean what I write. Now I know why Acts of Parliament are written in such a long winded fashion. Thanks Les, I know Kilninian & Kilmore Parish I have visited Mull several times, but I thought you stated there was a seperate list for Kilninian & Kilmore as distinct from the Mull list, can you tell me what that is? is it on GENUKI? 1. [ARGYLL] Surname Interest
    2. Shane & Deb
    3. Hi, I'm new to list & would like to post my surname interests for Arygll. I am researching the family of Donald MCLACHLAN, b abt 1789, & Ann MCLEAN, b abt 1808, both of Appin. Known children: Alexander b abt 1828, Mary b abt 1835, Christy b abt 1840, Angus b abt 1845, Allan b abt 1847, Ewen b abt 1848, Maggie b abt 1851. I have a record which suggests 9 children, but have only found 7. All of the children were born in or about Appin. They came to Canada as a family in 1851 and farmed in Glengarry County, Ontario. I have the family well researched from the 1861 Canada census to current day. Present day spelling of the family name is MacLachlan. They all belonged to the Prebyterian Church of Scotland in Canada. This is my first attempt at any tracing of the family in Scotland. Any suggestions would be warmly welcomed! Regards, Shane Preedy Rossland, BC shane&deb@telus.net

    1. [ARGYLL] William McIntosh 93rd Regiment, Isle of Skye, Argyll?
    2. John McIntosh
    3. A while ago I found the following from the army pension records in WO22/131 and WO22/132, which are returns for Inverness for 1842-52 and 1852-62. William MCINTOSH of 93rd regiment, admitted to pension 8 October 1834, transferred to Inverness district June 1848 (from N. Argyle), transferred to N. Argyle June 1850. Since then from WO 23/45 1845-54 During the decade covered by the register he is shown 1 April 1846 Isle of Skye 1 June 1846 Argyle (Excise) - ( probably means he was collecting his money from an Excise tax office) 1 April 1848 Inverness 1 July 1850 Isle of Skye, Argyle WO 23/51 1855-1865 Subject is simply shown on the books but he is not shown as died. WO 23/61 1865-1875 Subject is shown on the books with no additional annotations up to 1875 but his place of receiving pension is in the Argyle District. It looks like for these records that the Isle of Skye was consider as Argyll. Can anyone comment on that? In 1845 John MCINTOSH was born to William and Alexanderina MCLEOD. Any comments appreciated. John McIntosh

    1. [ARGYLL] Airnascavagh - Balnabraid - Kilkivan
    2. Stewart Campbell
    3. Hi . Thanks to all who helped me locate all 3 places, I have had some fun going through the different pages suggested to me, on the www.iforshaw.ndtilda.co.uk pages , I found a very interesting article by Mary Balloch Galbraith, A Hill-Farm Girlhood - it gave such a detailed description of Airnascavagh that I feel as though I have been there. My Grt Grandfather went to Airnascavagh 1843-44 he left about 1892 but my Grandfather took over , and he stayed there until about 1898 which means that my Campbell forefathers occupied Airnascavagh for about 55 years - no prizes for guessing where I am going first opportunity. I am assuming that the above Mary Galbraiths people had gone there later on. Anyway, thanks once again for all your help. Regards. Stewart

    1. [ARGYLL] Airnascavagh & Balnabraid
    2. Stewart Campbell
    3. Hi All. My Grt Grandfather Archibald Campbell lived at Airnascavagh Kintyre for at least 46 years, in the 1851 census he was noted as being a shepherd on 700 acres of Moorland, I have recently confirmed that this farm was part of the Duke of Argyll,s Estates. My Grt Grt Grandfather Colin Campbell was also on the 1851 census at Balnabraid, as a shepherd on 900 acres Moor, the census entry suggests that this was close to the above Airnascavagh, and I wonder if this was also part of the Dukes Estates ?? can anyone help with that theory, I am also wondering if some K S might suggest a good early Map Site where I might be able to locate, Airnascavagh or Balnabraid, I am assuming that they are/were, down Southend direction. Regards Stewart Campbell.

    3. Hi All . I have heard of Kilkivan Cemetery, and know that is in the Campbeltown area, I know where Kilkerran Cemetery is but am not sure about Kilkivan, I have just discovered that we had a Donald Campbell buried there in 1856. Can anyone tell where it is ? or where I might get to see the burial records ?, I am now wondering what other ancestors may be buried there. Thanks in advance for any help or advice . Regards Stewart Campbell

    2. C J Stevens Am I right in thinking that the Gorteneorn which you are talking about is at the landward end of the north side of the Ardnamurchan peninsula more or less on Kentra Bay? (The nearest place which one would be likely to find on a road map would be Acharacle.) Frank Bigwood

    1. [ARGYLL] MacDonald's Land in Inveraray
    2. Rosemary Meechan
    3. I promised an acquaintance on the Scots Origins list that I would try to find out more about MacDonald's Land in Inveraray, where some of his ancestors lived in the 19th century. I had the feeling that this would be one of those tenement-type properties that seem to hang around West Highland towns like a bad smell- Campbelltown(is this the correct spelling?) is a case in point- why, with all that space, would anybody build Partick-type tenements in such a beautiful spot? Sorry....rant over....return to question at hand. Does anybody know how or where we can discover the mystery of MacDonald's Land? Would that not seem to be a very unlikely name with the Campbell Dukes just up the road? Answer on one side of a page only to..... Rosemary P.S. Why is Inveraray such an unlovable little place? I have tried really, really hard to like it....Lochgilphead I find very pleasant....but Inveraray gives me a deep, deep feeling of depression every time I pass through it....and the pubs are not very nice....and the Jail is just a rip-off....could this be some kind of ancestral feeling of doom? Although I love the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and that woodland place next door to it and the gardens round the other side of Loch Fyne.......we once spent hours and hours...which in an other parallel universe would have translated into years and years ...in Inveraray after a car crash....seriously bad karma...well, it was the sixties...It is the only place in Argyll which sends out bad vibrations...I tend to accelerate through it with my Ivan Drever CD on full blast...and a tree in that area once attacked my dog and impaled a branch in her chest and I had to take her to a vet in Lochgilphead...I think I feel an attack of the Inveraray vapours coming on..... ===== Nkosi sikelel, Africa, Ishe komborera Africa, God bless Africa. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [ARGYLL] Gorteneorn
    2. Robert Stevens
    3. Hello Listers, My g grandfather was living at Gorteneorn in 1851, according to the census, where he was a "farmer of one acre." Although I have looked at maps of this area, they really do not give me any idea of what the topography is like. Would anyone have a photo or post card of the area that they would be willing to copy for me please? Or perhaps someone would be kind enough to give me a written description. I am also interested to know if any buildings remain there today, and what a typical croft/farm dwelling would have looked like. If anyone is able to help with my enquiries, would you please email to my address. Thanking you in anticipation. C J Stevens.

    1. [ARGYLL] Calve Island
    2. Robert Stevens
    3. Could anyone please enlighten me as to what conditions were like on Calve Island during the early 1800's? Are there any remains of crofts to be seen today? Would the crofts have been made of stone with thatched roofs? I have scant information about this place where my ancestors appear to have lived for a time. All I know is that the island is uninhabited today. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you. C J. Stevens.
