Hi Sheila, they have a web site at www.obangames.com The last time I looked it didn't have any dancing but has the list of winners of the Piobaireachd Gold Medal. Your Cameron was a famous piper, as well as a dancer. Most of the dancers of that period were also pipers, women of course were not allowed to compete. There were a few Alex Camerons, the one you are looking for is Alick Cameron, sometimes called Sandy, sometimes Alex or Alexander. George McLennan wrote a great tune for him called Alick Cameron, Champion Piper. There was a story doing the rounds that he was a better piper than dancer. McLennan, one of the great names in Scottish music composition scotched that story with his title. I edit a Scottish magazine and also write on piping - I have a great deal of info on the Camerons. (piping). I can't promise to be quick but will happily share what I have. I'd also be very interested in what you collect about his dancing - Highland dancing material is like hen's teeth. regards Bruce Campbell >From: "Donald Tryk" <esquipi@sofnet.com> >To: SCT-ARGYLL-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [ARGYLL] Argyllshire Gathering/Oban Games >Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2003 14:50:25 -0600 > >Does anyone know where records of winners at the Argyllshire Gathering/Oban >Games might be kept? Does anyone know where records of winners at the Argyllshire Gathering/Oban Games might be kept? I am particularly looking for any mention of a dancer named Alexander (Sandy) Cameron in the late 1800s, probably 1870 to 1900. Sheila
Hello: I believe if you go onto Scotlands People it will let you put in Ann McColl's name as mother, and your grandfather's name and the birth year, and you will probably come up with a list of possible births. I have two Ann McColls, but our great grandmother Ann McColl went to Canada in 1884, she was born in 1819 on Lismore. She was married to Donald McPhail. Some of their kids were born on Mull. Hello everyone, I am new to this list and am trying to trace my elusive ANNAND family! I have found on the IGI a record of birth for an Alexander Annand who might be my 4 x great grandfather, however I am trying to prove that he is and I am not sure how I can go about doing this. The record I have found is: Alexander ANNAND christened 28 Sep 1790, Inveraray & Glenaray Father: John ANNAND Mother: Mary LINDSAY The definite information I have about my Alexander ANNAND is that he moved down to England sometime before 1815 and married Susanna?. Alexander and Susanna had 7 children, all christened at the church of St Andrew, Enfield, Middlesex between 1815 and 1827. I have found my Alexander on the 1841 census of Edmonton, Middlesex, aged 50, Gardener, born Scotland. From the Scotlandspeople website I have found 3 or 4 Alexander ANNAND's christenings which would fit this age group on the 1841 census. The Inveraray and Glenaray one fits best. Does anyone have any ideas how I could prove that this Alexander ANNAND from Inveraray and Glenaray is mine? Is the 1841 census for this area indexed? If so, I thought that perhaps if there is an Alexander ANNAND of the right age it might show that the he did not move to England. I have been unable to find a marriage for him in Inveraray and Glenaray which points to the fact that perhaps he was the one that moved to England and married Susanna. I hope the above makes sense, This is such a brickwall for me and I would be so grateful if anyone could help me with the problem. Kind regards Kirsty in New Zealand. _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

G'day Can anyone tell me if Rob LIVINGSTON's site is still around. I have tried to access it again on a number of occasions recently without success. It is/was excellent last time I had a squiz. Anne Maye.
I saw this posted on another List and thought it of interest here as our Lachie is buried on Mull. He did a good job as Governor of NSW in very trying times and was not given very good treatment by the British Govt of the time. The following info from the Australian Mint (oops forgot the 'Royal') has issued some info from which this is part. Anne Maye ... Royal Australian Mint is issueing a 2003 silver 'Holey Dollar & Dump'. The following information is from their brochure. 'In order to faithfully replicate the details of the Holey Dollar and Dump, both the reverse and obsverse of two authentic coins were laser scanned by the Mint's high-tech 3-dimensional image scanner.' This should be of interest - "The Hole Story Legacies of a turbulent but defining period in Australia's development, the distinctive Holey Dollar and Dump originated from a desperate shortage of coins in the fledgling colony of New South Wales. This early lack of uniform currency resulted in widespread confusion, corruption and profiteering which undermined the fragile political and social structure of the colony. In order to remedy the settlement's monetary woes and help restore law and order, Governor Lachlan Macquarie offered an ingenious solution. In 1813, he ordered the centres of 40,000 Spanish Dollars be punched out and both the outer ring and displaced plug counterstamped with new denominations. The outer rings, restamped with a value of five shillings, quickly became known as Holey Dollars while the centre-pieces, overstruck to be worth fifteen pence each, were called Dumps. >From their introduction, the coins became the economic lifeblood of >the colony for over a decade and the scarce number that survive >today serve as a lasting testament to the resourcefulness of >Australia's pioneering spirit and a milestone in numismatic history." I have been aware of the site for some time and have found that some of the entries are as much as 10 years out of date. Currently a lot of Estates in Scotland are changing owners. A number have been split, whilst other have been merged, since the 1800s. However, the site gives maps of the Estate marches (boundaries) at the last shown owner(s) so, if you know where your ancestors were in the 19th century, you can locate them on the "current" estates. Dear Keith Thanks very much. I am sure many people will spend hours (just like me) checking out the "whoownsscotland" site. It has helped me see where my Cameron ancestors came from - Moy Crofts. Hello list, This may be slightly off topic but I have received a lot of help from the various lists, so here goes. I have stumbled across a site which shows in map form and has a "free" search of the various properties/farms etc in Scotland and who currently owns them. All records are from official Govt sources. Argyll has 332 properties shown. The site is www.whoownsscotland.org.uk Apparently there is a book of same name published as well. We found the current owners of property where my ancestors worked. Check it out, Thanks, Keith Campbell Perth Western Australia

I NEED YOUR HELP Please forgive me for posting this off-topic letter to this list but I didn't know any other way to get it out to a large amount of people in a very small amount of time. I play chat online every night with a woman in Rotterdam, Holland by the name of Therese Schot who is dying of leukemia and doesn't have much time more to live. She was just told this week that her medicines were not working anymore and that there wasn't much more that the doctors could do for her.. She is very brave but you could see from her chat that the news devastated her for she will be leaving behind two young children. I believe in the power of prayer and realize that only a miracle can save Therese now so since I am but one small voice could each of you pray for her also and could I please ask that you send this letter out to all your families, friends, members of your church and acquaintances to pray for her also and perhaps together we might be able to succeed in keeping her alive. Permission is granted to cut and paste this letter and send it out to everyone you know. Thanks for your help in saving my friend, Sincerely, Judi McRae Tacoma, Washington, USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Judi ~~ a Proud Canadian living in Lakewood/Tacoma, WA, USA Researching CAMPBELL, LITTLE, STIMSON & WALLBRIDGE & others, mostly in Canada and the British Isles. Hi all Thanks to a suggestion from Lou in a message off line, I checked out a relative of the McPhails I've been looking for and I've found that they were in Glasgow in 1834, the date of birth in Glasgow of a 'new' sister I've just found for Donald McPhail. That suggests they moved to Glasgow between 1828 when Donald was born and 1834 when the 'new' sister was born. No need for anyone to check any Argyll censuses therefore! edward Limpsfield, Surrey
Hi I'm new to the list. I'm looking for the family of Donald McPhail and Catherine (or possibly her real name is Isabella) m.s. Cameron. In the 1881 Census they were in Glasgow, and were noted as, Donald age 53, from Campbeltown, Argyll (I have a copy of his birth certificate of 17/3/1828 in Campbeltown) and Catherine age 56 from Oban, Argyll. I have her death certificate and her mother was an Isabella Cameron. Their son James was born in Glasgow c. 1855, so if anyone can do a look up to see if they can find Donald and Catherine (or maybe it will be Isabella) in either the 1841 or 1851 censuses, that would be great. I'd like to know where they might have been to see if I can confirm their movements and her name. The only Donald McPhail and a Cameron marriage I can find on scotlandspeople is for a Donald and Isabella Cameron in Ormsaigbeg on Ardnamurchan on 28/12/1852. I find this unlikely, unless the 1881 census entry of Oban was simply an inaccurate description of the true location of Ormsaigbeg. I have not found Catherine/Isabella's birth certificate on scotlandspeople. In case it helps, Donald's parents were Colin McPhail and Marion m.s. Campbell. Catherine/Isabella's parents were Donald Cameron and Isabella m.s. McPhail. Any help much appreciated. edward Limpsfield, Surrey
I understand that the Moy from which my forebears came to Australia was a farm on the River Lochy about 10 km NW of Fort William or 2 km south of the point where the River Spean joins it. The literature suggests that Moy in Gaelic is A Mhoigh which means the plain and is famous as the place that Prince Charlie and his army rested on the third and fourth nights of their outward march from Glenfinnan (MacCulloch, DB 1971, Romantic Lochaber, Arisaig and Morar, 3rd edn, W&R Chambers, Edinburgh, p. 132). Further to Heather Oldham's query : > I have just come across two towns/villages by the name of "Moy" in the > 1985 Bartholomew Road Atlas of Britain (in the Argyle area) > First question - What does Moy mean? I've managed to consult my gaelic "oracle" (in his 80's) who informs me that "Moy" comes from "Magh or Maigh" meaning meadow, plain or level country. Out of interest he also informs me that, as well as "Moy & Dalarossie" in Inverness-shire, there is another Parish of Moy ie "Dyke & Moy" in Elgin (or Morayshire) and at least one other Moy (place) in Nairne (or Nairnshire) on the Moray Firth.
