3. Sandy I have only just picked this message up, as I have been away from home. I don't *know* the answer to your question, but I strongly suspect that these are all the same place - and the same too as "Port na Chro", a pair of semi detached cottages that are now let out as holiday cottages by the Skipness estate, located on a beach at a tiny one-time harbour north of Skipness Point. I also believe them to be the same as "Port Chro" where an Elizabeth (and several variants of that Christian name) TAYLOR was living until 1817, having until then been a regular recipient of parish charity, as evidenced by the Kirk Sessions minutes - this Elizabeth TAYLOR *may* have been the same as my great great great grandmother of that name (maiden surname THOMSON). I would be interested if you could let me have, on or off the list, a note of the OPR entries where you have found this place referred to, under all its spelling variants, in case it helps me better to pin down Elizabeth's identity. He was a Minister. it took him two yrs to arrive at Va.(1722) I believe that other family members or descendants could be Archibald, Hugh, Colin,John and Mary Campbell. They were all in the early migration to America. Thanks, Karen

2. Joy
3. Gabrielle, Forgive me - I've deleted the original message so am responding to the list. If you have not found suitable maps yet, I have some that I purchased a few years past. If I'm thinking properly, they were from the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies. Set of two, quite large - A. S. Argyll & Adjoining Counties (Greater Part of Argyll with Stirling, Dumbarton and Renfrew B. W. Inverness & N. Argyll They are pretty neat in the aspect that they outline the Parishes and give dates of the inception of OPR records which is quite handy. If I'm thinking correctly today, you probably desire to have these for the Free Census site? If so, I can scan them & send them over to you - but they will be in four parts. Otherwise, I hope to have them on my little web site in a few days. Best regards, Joy USA http://www.genealogy4you.com/hobbyco/

2. Diarmid This may be of no use to you at all because I am not at all sure of the geography of Scotland and there fore I do not know how close Knapdale and Auchindrain are, but my family's history is documented in the 40+ page manuscript entitled "The Campbells from Auchindrain" by Emily Campbell Price. Auchindrain, Argyllshire is now a open-air museum of farming life. In that manuscript several of my ancestors are said to have lived in Knapsdale and South Knapsdale. This manuscript is available thru your FHC and further information can be reviewed at the following website. http://geovisualbusinessmaps.com/f_auchin.htm or can be obtained from Ted Lollis, my cousin who is the owner of the website. 3. Joy, that is REALLY impressive.I have been looking for McCalmans in this area, but now wonder if MCHELMAN or MCCOLEMAN could be alternative versions of that name. Does anybody have any opinions? Also, Cottlellocon as a name(hamlet or farm?) doesn't ring any bellls. Can anybody help with this? Transcribing all those names must have been a nightmare. Well done! 3. Dear Argyll List I am new to the List but live in Argyll. I am writing an up-dated (sponsored) history on South Knapdale with emphasis on Loch Caolisport - and the Castle Sween to Kilberry coastal communities. I am most interested to know of any research people would be willing to share on families there, particularly those who emigrated to Australia, North America or New Zealand, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe etc. But I am also interested to include any local families here in Argyll or Glasgow etc. whose families had connections with Loch Caolisport or lower Loch Sween and down to Kilberry or either of the Leargnahensions. I have used Somerled MacMillan's 'Families of Knapdale' and 'The MacMillans and Their Septs' and also 'North Knapdale in the 17th and 18th Centuries' by (Rev) Alexander Fraser BD. I also have the fundamental paper by David Sellar of Edinburgh University on the Families of Knapdale descended from the Irish prince Anrothan who came over to Argyll in about 1050 and was ancestor of the MacSweens, MacGilchrists, MacSorleys, MacLachlans and Lamonts. I have also been provided with the research of Heather McFarlane in the Yukon about Loch Caolisport families. Looking at the leading families - Anrothan kindred c. 1050-1262 Menteiths of Knapdale1262-1360 (died out reverted to crown) Crown overlordship 1360-1376 Lords of the Isles 1376-1475 (Earldom of Ross taken away) Crown overlordship 1475-1481 Lords of the Isles 1481-1493 (part of Knapdale re-granted, then forfeit) Crown overlordship 1493-1499 (Argyll made Bailie of royal lands) Earl of Argyll overlord 1502-etc. These have fair outlines researched and written about them. What is less easy to document is the life of the people they were responsible for and their descendants who made their own choices in life. Any thoughts, suggestions, advice or material would be appreciated. 1. [ARGYLL] quarries in Argyll
2. proudscot
3. Hi, I am trying to complete the family picture and would love to know about the history and localities of any of the above. My Marr family at some point were based in Argyllshire. I have the following information. William Marr b. 1838 in Aberdeen, wife Mary Ann Taylor b. 1841 in Aberdeen. William Marr was a settmaker/journeyman, so I'm pretty sure he was following the work availbale in the quarries at that time. For a few years the family was based in Kilspindie, Perthshire and William worked at the Pitroddie Quarry. Two of their daughters were born there. One of their son's, Alexander Marr b. Ben Aur, Argyll; a daughter; Mary Ann Marr b. Furnace, Argyll and another daughter Ann Marr b. Ben Awe, Argyll. Daughter Mary Ann may well be the same Mary Ann I have found b. in Culmodden, Argyll in 1873. When William Marr and Mary Ann Taylor's son William (b.1861 in Aberdeen) got married in Kilspindie in 1881, the marriage certificate shows an address of Ardchattan, Argyllshire for both him and his parents and that William had followed his father's footsteps and worked as a stone-dresser. Can anyone shed some light on these addresses and their histories? Has anyone else got stonedressing ancestors who worked these quarries and may have come across my family members? many thanks, Karen
