    1. [ARGYLL] McGregors in Argyll
    2. Hello, all!  I was on this list for a while early in my research; now that I know more, I've come back.  My name is Bettymae Ryland.  I live in Northern California.  I was born a McGregor, and am researching this family: John McGregor, b.circa 1762, married circa 1787 to Katherine Munroe son Gregor McGregor bap. 15 August 1788 in Kilchrenan and Dalavich, married Sarah McLachlan b. 1786 in Kilcalmonel and Kilberry, died 19 January 1864 in Inverary. Gregor and Sarah's children: John bap. 12 December, 1813 Duncan McGregor, bap.26 August 1815 in Inverary, d. 1 June 1901 in Glencoe, Ontario, Canada  (my gggrandfather) Peter McGregor b.7 February, 1818 Angus McGregor b. circa 1819 Their story, as far as we know it, is this:  sometime after Angus was conceived in 1818/1819, but before 1831, Gregor died, not from natural causes, perhaps an accident, perhaps foul play.  Sarah sent Duncan to live with her father, Duncan McLachlan in Lochgilphead. The two Duncans emmigrated to Canada in 1831. John may have been old enough to go out on his own, or he may have been sent to his McGregor relatives, who may have brought him to Canada.  Peter and Angus stayed with Sarah; she remarried, a Duncan McCorkindale. Angus married another Sarah McLachlanin 1865.  They had two children, Sarah, b.1866,d. 1958, and Peter, b.1872, d. 1947. I am hoping (1) that Sarah or Peter have a descendant out there who might see this and contact me. or (2) that someone knows the story of Gregor's death. Any help is much appreciated.  Good to meet you all in any case!  Sincerely, Bettymae

    1. [ARGYLL] COLQUHOUN Maria (Mary), Kilmallie?
    2. Gaile and Grant
    3. Hi, I am new to the list. Maria COLQUHOUN was born about 1788 according to her death entry here in New Zealand. Another source puts her birth at 1794. She married Ewen CAMERON at Innerscuddle, Kilmallie 28 Feb 1811 and with their family they immigrated to N.Z. in 1840 on the 'Blenheim'. I would like to find her family. Possible parents are: John COLQUHOUN/Mary MCILVRA or Dugald COLQUHOUN/ Agnes LIVINGSTON. Any help welcomed. Gaile, Motueka N.Z.

    2. Mary Hamilton
    3. Hi listers, I have just come across this great site which some of you might find helpful http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/info-gstreets3.html It lists most of the old street names and cites the origin of the name. For example, Goosedubbs (which was recently "on the list" got its name from the fact that the Provost's geese grazed there, not (as I thought) from being the place where poultry was killed and plucked. 1. [ARGYLL] Ancient genealogies
    2. Over a number of years I have come across a number of examples of spurious and badly researched ancestry . Beware of " lifting " information of the LDS " Ancestral File " . The LDS put on line submitted genealogies where quite often the " researcher " fails to check out sources and selects what he or she thinks could be the missing link . This of course makes a nonsense of everything . South Hall the home of the " baddie " laird ( Campbell ) who was involved with the McArthur case when he wrongly press ganged a man of the cloth on the eve of Trafalgar . OS ref is NS 061 721 .His lands stretched to the Holy Loch ( he evicted my 3 x great grand father ) as well as Inverchaolain and he was the brother in law of the chief of Clan Lamont . Col

    2. Donald Tryk
    3. I don't know if this has been mentioned before or not. The Oban Times web site has a link for downloading illustrated area maps. They're colorful and touristy, but very helpful, too, with castles, churches, ruins and all kinds of interesting details. There are maps of Oban, Lorn, Mid-Argyll, Lochaber, Ft. William, etc. Sheila

    3. Amen, amen, amen, Eileen! We found several IGI family histories that seemed to relate to my husband's mother's family. We were thrilled, until we started comparing them -- they were all suspiciously the same. When we contacted several of the submitters, they all gave the same source. He in turn got pretty huffy about being questioned. He had copied the data from published church histories, not primary sources, but he knew the data were impeccable. Neither he nor anyone else seemed to question twins that were born three months apart, and another brother and sister born six months apart... Back to the old drawing board. Sheila

    3. Last week, I attended a lecture where the lecturer claimed to have found 40 generations of her family all the way back to Charlemagne in 724 AD!!! When I enquired about where she found documentation, she said that she had found 3 books in the New York City Public Library with a family history that matched her grandmother's maiden name. This woman had spent the past 12 years copying all the names and details from these books onto ancestor sheets, and claiming that everyone in the books - Henry 2nd thru Henry 8th, Elizabeth 1st, etc. back to Charlemagne were her ancestors. The above reminded me how easy it is to be led astray in genealogical research. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many nou-veau riche, who came from humble beginnings, wanted respectability. They hired genealogists to find their ancestors and create an impressive family history. Many dishonest genealogists created family histories that satisfied the clients, but were completely untrue. They created elaborate histories with anecdotes galore and many famous ancestors, mostly titled!! The finished history would be printed in handsome leather-bound volumes, and the nou-veau riche would present them to local libraries, colleges, family, friends and business acquaintances. The most infamous rogue genealogist, Gustave Anjou, charged $9,000.00 to prepare a "family history," at the turn of the century!!! Since then, many researchers have used these books, not realizing that the information was made from whole cloth (fabricated). Many patron submissions on the IGI come from books such as those. In fact, the Mormon Library carries over 100 family histories prepared by Anjou, all false. Eileen Herkes, NY

    3. Bruce Thanks for the info. South Hall was on the Atlas. Knowing where to look really helps! Is it still part of the Campbell Estate? It is in the Parish of Inverchaolain (514) according to my Parishes of Scotland book. So Scotlandspeople may be an option now. Sheila

    3. Thanks to a special friend, Douglas Brown, who has allowed me to post his 1851 census index for the above parish. The direct link to only 1851 is: http://www.genealogyforyou.com/hobbyco/census/1851.html Access to all four census returns is: http://www.genealogyforyou.com/hobbyco/ I would like to start adding some photos of the area as time allows, and other appropriate information. Since I have so few photos and my misc. files remind me of a scrabble board, if you have some you would like to share, please advise. I'd prefer any attachments be sent to my alter-ego email addy - beatsme00@yahoo.com but this one works too. Happy hunting to all, Joy, USA

    3. Jill Find John LAMONT's death certificate by searching <scotlandspeople>. If he died in Scotland, he'll be there. The age will be a clue if your search gives multiple choices and, once you've chosen an entry from the index, you should know if you've got the right certificate because it will describe him as the husband (or widower) of Jessie IRELAND. His death certificate will give the names of both his parents. 3. Hi everyone I wonder if anyone could give me any ideas on where to go next with my husbands LAMONT family We have John LAMONT who married Jessie IRELAND in logie-pert in 1857 (children : Jessie Lauder , elizabeth , John , alexander Gilmour , Mary Margaret , Adelaide and Amelia Jane) The 1881 census states his birthplace as kildavik , argyll and his age at 57.......this threw me off the scent for a while but eventually it came about that both the place and the date of birth were mistranscribed...............his birthplace was probably kildavaig in argyll and he was actually 51 in 1881 and not 57........ On the IGI there are several John LAMONTs, a few born in 1830........I have looked at them all, and their parents , and families to see if any one of them seems more likely than the other.........at the moment i am leaning towards his parents being Peter LAMONT and Elizabeth STEWART..........that is the only one i can find born in 1830 on the scotspeople website and therefore seems a bit more concrete..............but all the LAMONT familes i have found seem to have a lot of the same names in them so it is hard to tell........ Can the LDS libraries get PR's for scotland ?........i feel i might still be in the same quandry if i look at them???!!!....... Thankyou for taking the time to read this......any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Jill Sheffield UK jilly4@blueyonder.co.uk

    2. Shane & Deb
    3. Hi Jill, Here would be my suggestions; 1. I would try to find John & Jessie, w/children on the 1871 & 1861 censuses, (which you can order the films for from your local LDS). 2. I would also try to find them on later censuses (1891 & 1901). You may find other family members living with them which may give you clues. Many times I have found parents &/or siblings living with the family that give me valuable leads. 3. The actual OPR records (which you can also order the films for at your local LDS) will give you same information as the IGI record, excepting that they may also give you a more exact location for the event. If John is from a "community" of only a few households, then your chances of making family connections are quite good. 4. If you have any luck with any of the above, then the 1841 & 1851 censuses would help you to further tie together your families. Hope this helps, Shane Preedy Rossland, BC shane&deb@telus.net
