    1. [ARGYLL] Wills site question
    2. Joy
    3. Hi All, I've been prowling the wills site in hopes that some of the ones I'd like to have will show up. Not much yet, but in narrowing the relationships, I acquired two different pages last night for a Nanny Johnston alias Fletcher of Luing with next of kin as John Johnston (1850). Neither at the moment seem to be mine, but my actual question is ~ Since there always seem to be information on other wills when you download the page(s) you need, has anyone started a site for sharing of the non-essential names? Rather like the BMD site, but exclusive to wills maybe? Or possibly the kind folks that host the BMD site can create another link now that these wills are becoming available through the net? Last question - has our host for the Argyll web pages been ill? I've had so much difficulty with the links through the Argyll web pages of late, I just wondered. Hoping all are having a very successful hunt ~ Joy, USA

    1. [ARGYLL] KELLY & WALLACE, Campbeltown, late 1800s
    2. Sarah Galbraith
    3. William KELLY (1870 - 1905) married Helen McDIARMID WALLACE (1869 - 1905) in Campbeltown in 1896. I have traced most of their descendants and a number of their ancestors, but would be interested in the families of their siblings, and more detail about their ancestors. Summary information follows: KELLY William Kelly was the son of Donald KELLY (1845 - 1882), a blacksmith and Elizabeth McMURCHY (1849 - 1926). Donald and Elizabeth had at least nine children between 1870 and 1881, some of whom died as infants. I am interested in finding out about: Jane b 1871 married an Alexander McINTYRE and had at least one son called Donald. James (1873 - 1950) married a Helen BROWN and had at least one son, probably also named Donald John b 1874 Mary / Maria Ann b 1877 Donald b 1881 WALLACE Helen McDIARMID WALLACE was the daughter of Archibald WALLACE (1834 - 1887) and Mary McDIARMID (1837 - ?) and had at least five siblings as follows: Marion (1859 - 1884) married James DOUGLAS and had three sons, William, Wallace and James Mary b 1861 married Henry O'HARA Catherine b 1866 married a BRODIE Archibald and Alexander died in infancy Does anyone recognise any of these people? I would, as always, be delighted to exchange information Sarah Galbraith sarah.galbraith@appleton.globalnet.co.uk

    1. [ARGYLL] OPR - meaning?
    2. Mary Breer
    3. Hello Listers, On several occasions I have seen the following information written in the Baptismal Records of the OPR's. ie: Flora, daughter of Agnes McKenzie and John Graham. Donald McKenzie took the vows. Does this indicate an irregular Marriage? The parents went on to have several more children, all Baptized in the same Parish. Would appreciate some opinions as to the meaning. Thank you, Mary

    3. Message posted to list; e-mail address of Karen Dickerson not working Karen Not sure I can help further with this [links to John SMITH, Campbeltown, 18th century]. I've never found a death record or gravestone for Malcolm Smith, and so have not been able to identify his parents with any confidence. The records of the Duke of Argyll's tenants in Kintyre in 1792 list the following family, and he might be this son of Duncan Smith and Mary Kelly - but no real proof. Knockhantybeg Duncan Smith 48 Mary Kelly 40 Neill 18 John 16 Janet 12 **Malcolm 10** Duncan 4 Sorry I cannot be of more help Best regards Sarah

    1. [ARGYLL] MUIR & SMITH, Campbeltown, 1800s
    2. Sarah Galbraith
    3. MUIR & STEWART Arthur MUIR and Mary STEWART had children Christina, Alexander, Janet, Agnes, Arthur, James, John, Hugh and Mary Jane between 1846 and 1868 in Campbeltown. Hugh (1863 - 1928) is my ancestor, and considerable research has been done on his family, but my knowledge about the other children is pretty scant. If any others are researching this family, I'd be happy to exchange information. SMITH & SHEARER Hugh MUIR's (1863 - 1928) wife was Ellen SMITH (1861 - 1936), and she was the daughter of Malcolm SMITH of Islay (1826 - 1871) and Ellen or Helen SHEARER (1837 - 1865) This couple had children Elizabeth (born 1859), Ann (1863) and Dugald (1865) in addition to Ellen, and there may have been others. I have no knowledge of the families of Elizabeth, Ann or Dugald, and would welcome the opportunity to exchange information. To ensure that we don't duplicate work, I should point out that I have the 1881 census, and have transcribed most of the relevant birth, marriage and death records for the direct ancestors, and some of those for siblings. With thanks for any help and advice Sarah Galbraith Cheshire, England

    2. Brian Maye
    3. Hi List Some more from me .. I am trying to extend my scant knowledge of my CAMPBELL connection from Morvern. After the recent very interesting postings about names, I suspect that I have a naming oddity in a Peggy who is not a Margaret (Margaret = Meg = Peg) but a Mary. This could arise because she was called Margaret by her parents (and subsequently Peggy) and that the records listed her as Mary because of the translation to English of the gaelic names which sound similar to the non-native speaker. I am interested in a CAMPBELL family from near Lochaline in MOR ARL which I believe was: John CAMPBELL & Katrine LIVINGSTONE Issue: Mary c 1805 (my Peggy) Alexander c1815 (possibly) Duncan c1816 (possibly) One of these boys may have had a daughter Barbara. Peggy CAMPBELL married Dugald McLACHLAN c1823. These are my gggrandparents. Any connections out there? Anne Maye.

    3. To Anne BAIN who is looking for info on Alexander McLACHLAN .. Have you tried the indexes to the shipping records for NSW for Assisted Immigrants? Depending on where you live, these are in many University Libraries and Family History Groups have them if you cannot get to the State Library in Sydney or the State Records at the Rocks in Sydney. They would have them at the SAG in Sydney and other state Genealogical Socs would also have them. Anne Maye.

    3. Hi List Have been continuing to tie myself in knots with my McLACHLANS and their connections and generally lurking. A query .. There is a grave with a headstone in Keil cemetery at Lochaline with a simple inscription in gaelic. It is for the Bard, Iain McLachlainn 1804-1874. Is this the Dr John McLACHLAN of Rahoy, son of Robert McLACHLAN of Rahoy, and brother-in-law of John SINCLAIR of Lochaline? Anne MAYE in chilly Armidale NSW OZ.

I have been spending lots of time and money finding family on Scotlandspeople to see if I can bring them up to more recent times. My original family was LIVINGSTONE from Ballachuilish, but I notice from my recent research that Donald and Annie McGILLIVRAY (nee Cameron), John and Lucy McGILLEVRAY (nee Robertson), Elsie SUCKSMITH (nee Mitchell) Christina SUCKSMITH (nee McGILLIVRAY), her daughter Joan Sucksmith, and Helen McGILLIVRAY (nee Chisholm) and son Ian McGILLIVRAY all died in Kinlochleven (or it was their usual residence at date of death) in the 1922-1951 period. Do you know of them or their descendants - I'd love to have contact with a member of the family. Any help you can give would be most appreciated. Regards Kaye Saunders Dunedin, New Zealand --
