    2. Hi Win Thanks for the tip about the 1861 Morven census - very helpful. Does it give all the details for Morven or only selected? I have some queries about your Murdoch Currie - think he married the sister of my gg grandfather - but I'm off on holiday for a few days and will post on my return. John S

    3. I wonder if that story is a truism? I have also heard the story of the parish of Kilmore and Kilbride in Isle of Mull which has missing OPR records and the story goes that the minister was sailing across Loch Na Keal in Mull when a storm blew up and sank the small boat resulting in the loss of the parish records . I have McNivens in my tree from Morven,Argyll. 1. [ARGYLL] Black Family
    2. Angus & Debra Black
    3. Hello, I've been doing my Black family tree. Our family originally came from Craignish. I can't find anything before 1730's. Archibald Black married ?. Children where Marrion Black born 05/08/1757, then Duguld Black born 11/02/1760 and our descendant Malcolm Black born 06/05/1762. Is there any way I can find out who Archibald married (as the birth certificate only shows the fathers name) and maybe any information about his family? Any information would be gratefully received. I also want to find out about Grandfathers brother, Archibald Black born in Kilcherian on 19/10/1876, he seems to have just disappeared. Last known to be in Oban in 1903 for Grandfathers wedding. Maybe emigrated? How can I find out? Kind regards Debra Black Melbourne, Australia.

    3. To Debra Black: I suppose Archibald Black is a fairly common name. But here's what I have. Archibald Black Menzies was born to Margaret Black (unmarried) and Robert Andrew Menzies in Oban in 1875. We have assumed that Margaret's father was likely an Archibald Black. The census report says she was from Tobermory, and would have been born around 1853. But nobody her age seems to have been born in Tobermory. It's possible Margaret's parents lived in the Lismore area. That's not much to go on, but it may provide some clues for you. Sheila in Missouri

    3. Thank you once again , Les. We are going to "SctPple" site now to find, if possible, Neil's parents. The lady in Oz definitely has those three last children, though I think that a couple of them are a mystery to her too except that Neil's son Neil is, of course, also her ancestor and Dugald died at Neil's sheep station in Victoria, Australia age 26. So it is really Mary and Jannet, as she spells it, who are the mystery children. She believes they probably died young. Neil senior arrived in Oz around 1849. I'm just including all this information in case anyone else is interested in this family. 3. Liz The short answer to your question is that there are certainly GAPS in the records on the IGI, at about the times you mention. I know of countless individuals who were born , married etc, in the Kilninver/Kilmelford area and with no mention on the IGI, however I do see that the NAS have ( and they can be viewed in Edinburgh) the Kilninver/Kilmelford Church of Scotland Kirk Session records CH2/756 , 1758-1977, and the Free Church CH3/693, 1845- 1929, now I hope to get down and have a look through those records ASAP, however :- however what I wonder is will I find more on those that I can on the IGI , OR will the IGI researchers have already gone through those ? . Anyone on the List gone through Kirk of Session records, and who has found early information that they couldn't have found elsewhere ? 3. Hi Chris, If you are looking for records pre-1855 you have to send for a printout I think. For 1 credit they tell you the information only. I also THINK it would be cheaper and more sensible to get the whole film from your local FHC and get them to help you copy a page - once you know which film you want! From 1855 you can download certificates for 5 credits which is worthwhile. I may have got this wrong so anyone knowing better may respond and explain. Best wishes, Mary in Perth (WA)

    3. I'm looking for more info on my several X great grandfather John CURRIE. He was b Torosay between 1782 - 1784. His death certificate 29 Apr 1862 Lochaline Morvern lists his age as 80 and his parents as Malcolm CURRIE and Sarah m/s McDONALD. Informant was his son Murdoch. I can't find ANY children listed to Malcolm CURRIE and Sarah McDONALD, Torosay, BUT there is one listing for an Archibald CURRY, b. 1794 with parents Malcolm CURRY and Marrion McDONALD. I have seen the names Sarah and Marion used for the same person before and wondered if this might be another example. Can anyone provide more information about any of the people listed above, or tell me if I might be on the right track with this ? John CURRIE married Jane McKAY (no record of marriage found) children: Murdoch and Hector b Torosay, Alexander, Agnes, Sarah, Anne, Cirsty and Janet b Morvern Some of these are on the IGI (and OPR), but no further information found and some are not on the IGI (or OPR) but I have found marriages and deaths for them. I'm hoping someone has some further information on some of these people. Thank you Win MacKenzie

Robert, the provost of Dumbarton was such a character. I hope to include his branch of the family in my book - if I ever get it to print. Does any one have access to the 1841 Census of Argyll? I would love to find Robert senior and Helen Macfarlan with their first child, Duncan who was born in 1840 in Fearnock, Argyll. We didn't get to Argyll when we were in Scotland in 2001.
