    1. [ARGYLL] Gaelic adjectives in names
    2. Allan B Currie
    3. Hi List, Can someone advise me on the use of some descriptive Gaelic words attached to some of my ancestors? “Og” , “Oig” and “Oigh” meaning small or young “Mor “ and “Mhor” meaning large, old or great “Dg” meaning nothing that I can determine “Dhu” meaning dark or black I realise that these words may be used in sentences but my concern is when they are inserted between given names and surnames. What are the differences between spellings? Gender? When used in names, should they be capitalized? I have seen the letter “o” with either grave or acute accents and sometimes with none. Any help from the Gaelic speakers would be appreciated.

    3. Should have mentioned the dates I was interested in were in records between 1822 and 1844. I was looking for Hugh Watson, his wife Jane McMillan Watson, and their children. They were identified in the recreated records which were compiled sometime in the 1800's. Betty

    2. Betty and Bill Ottoson
    3. Not only is your information about missing records true, in 1990 with my own eyes I saw some of the duplicated records. I have done research in the Argyll area 5 times and have made some valuable local contacts in Campbeltown. My distant relative, Duncan Colville, now deceased, became a friend and mentor. His father was an "antiquarian" and a pack rat. He provided much information from original records to me. He didn't have records which I needed to cover a 12-year period of my family history where records had been destroyed by the out-of-wedlock minister. (In the original church records, such children are described as "born of fornification--" kind of a mean thing to inscribe in a church record. ) Some duplicate copies of the destroyed records do exist. Duncan paved the way for my husband and me to visit Ian MacDonald at his home in Clachan, Argyll, Scotland. I Mr. MacDonald had copies of records which were recreated from the results of research and transcription done by a Glen Barr schoolmaster named Robert McNiven. McNiven was able to reconstruct 333 pages of records from various other sources. For this great work, McNiven was paid 2 pounds, 10 shillings sterling, by the clerk session of Killean. I do not have the date the records were recreated, but it must have been some time in the 1800's. McNiven transcribed all the pages by hand, and the writing is similar to other records in the 1800's. His recreations were accurate according to our family Bible and other sources. There is no reason to doubt the additional information he provided, which we did not have--such as the name of the farm where the family lived. I did not have access to a copy machine and tried to copy by hand as much information as I could without intruding too long in the home of the MacDonalds. I cannot provide an exact address for Mr. MacDonald at this time. It is possible it is buried somewhere in all the pieces of paper I need to get in order in my genealogy material. However, Clachan is just a village. If he is still living there, mail might reach him. But, I promise you this: The story of the records being destroyed is TRUE. Betty

    1. [ARGYLL] Coll McTaggart and Mary McGregor
    2. Hi Bill Webster, I was just up to putting this lot on computer and "googling" McTaggart and Appin just in case someone from cotland was reasearching this lot and there you were. Did Mary McGregor have parents? Ch. are Hugh/Ewan 1811 Renfrew mar. Rebecca Beaton (ended up in Glasgow but son John lived with Dorothy Beaton and aunt Margaret Beaton in Co. Invernes at least till 1861), Sarah/Marion 1812 Renfrew unmar 28 years 1841 census, Mary 1814 recorded as McIntaggart Appin, Rachel 1816 (well depends what you read but 20 to 24 years 1841 census and fits here mar. Wm Muir came to Victoria, Cath 1818 mar. McPherson, Alex mar. Martha Austin, Angus 15 to 19 1841 census, John 1825 came to Victoria with Rachel and William and mar. here., Nancy 14 1841 census became Ann and born in 1830 unmar. living with sister Cath and her family 1881 census and Margaret. Now unless I am missing one Margaret or Sarah mar. John McPhee? Regards, Irene., Melbourne, Aus.

    3. Dear all, not wanting to unnecessarily prolong or widen this issue, the following reply to another list to which I subscribe gives a perspective that I have not previously seen. Perhaps our administrator would like to comment. We are not having the difficulties at this other list that we seem to be having here. Best wishes Bill. Marie It is not up to rootsweb how messages are replied to. This is a matter for the list owner. I am a list owner myself and have set things up such that replying to messages go to the list. Other list owners set things up such that replying to messages go only to the original sender. It is the list owners decision and not rootsweb. 1. [ARGYLL] Inverary
    2. Hi, I have other Argyll ancestry but I have lately been reinvestigating my Ayrshire roots and after many years have found the birthplace of my ancestors. Elizabeth Dempster, According to the 1851 census she was born in Inverary. I have to admit this was not what I was expecting! I had assumed she was from Ayrshire or thereabouts as the Dempster surname is so common there. She died in New Cumnock in 1858. I can find no baptism for her in Inverary (and alas her parents names where not recorded on her death cert), but she would have been born around 1771. I don't necessarily expect to find her family but i would be interested to know if there where any Dempsters about in this time period in the parish of Inverary (or nearby). If anyone knows of any Dempster's in this parish I would be grateful to hear about them. I don't suppose there are any estate records/renatals for this area? Much Thanks Morag

    2. John Sheather
    3. I am trying to find my Duncan Stewart's date of death....he was born in Kilmichael Glassary, c.1823 to Alexander Stewart and Janet McFarlan(e) He married Isabella Blair, c.1845, and they had 10 children. They seemed to move around a bit...in the 1881 census, I THINK I found Duncan with his son Duncan,c1860, as a ploughman in Paisley, where most of the family seemed to be. According to Marriage cert. of the other children he was dead between Sep.1891-Sep1895. Can anyone please suggest how I could find this relie. I have looked on Scotlands People and the usual places. Thank you, Betty S Best regards. John & Betty Sheather [email protected] 2006-12-09 Created with Foxmail 5.0 e-mail client. You can get it at http://www.GoodFreeSoftware.netfirms.com

    3. Hi All Apart from having McCallum cousins who descended from the families mentioned by Gordon McCallum on the List last week , I have other McCallum cousins who descend from Neil McCallum and Jean McAlister who married in Campbeltown 9 March 1852 - I thought I'd put those names to List before I go to find their deaths at Scotspeople, does anyone have any idea who their parents would have been ? or could someone perhaps find those individuals on the 1851 census ?. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. Regards Stewart Campbell
